err, the local time of your IM buddies

I'd like to be able to include my local time in my IM name (or similar) so that all the world can see what time it is where I am. This isn't for egotistical purposes, but if IMs displayed each users local time (optionally) then everyone would know whether it was appropriate to strike up a conversation.
For instance, I might not start a conversation with someone if it was 17:15 local time where they were as I'd assume they were on their way home.

thanks [noba] I'm not saying I couldn't ask them where they were and work out the time, but quite a lot of people travel too, adding a degree of complexity.

It's time to get live. It's time to represent. Sunset Park what time is it? God, that movie sucked.

neilp notes the date and time that the legendary [AfroAssault] annoed his idea.

Oh, I have a long way to go before I'm a legend.
So far no one has footage of me walking through the forest in a gorilla costume. Not anymore, anyways.

I keep asking my foreign buddies what time is it where they are, so this would be an amazing feature :)

I was going to suggest time stamping annos as well as date stamping them, but then I thought that was just too anal retentive for this site. Your idea on the other hand, is a goody. [+]

I would swear that I saw an IM client once that supported tokens in the user configured "nickname" field, one of which (tokens) would be replaced with the current time when displayed. I must be mixing up some memories because I can't find anything like that.

If you don't want to start a conversation, set your IM to "away". Or just ignore people when they attempt to start one.
-- omegatron, Mar 07 2007

I just set my IM to "away" or sign off completely at times when it would be inappropriate for people to contact me. I assume most sane people do the same.
