I'm surprised that there's no single- letter, doublestruck notation for the numbers in the interval [0,1].

It seems fairly fundamental a concept, considering there's an infinite number of them, and that a great many functions are defined with domain, codomain or both, using this specific interval - especially with machine- learning algebra almost exclusively operating within this niche location.

Therefore, I'd like to humbly suggest hereonforth using doublestruck U to describe the Unit Interval.

Lots of different fonts you can post on forums and in text messages. (Including doublestruck U). [xaviergisz, Dec 05 2018]

As a stop-gap, how about using a regular U and drinking heavily?
MaxwellBuchanan, Dec 04 2018

That works for the U's but renders much of the rest of the maths incomprehensible, so on balance, a net gain.

Perhaps this is less of a problem in the States, where they have math rather than maths?
MaxwellBuchanan, Dec 04 2018

Quite, in the states, there is only a single math for people to contemplate, whilst here in the birthplace of reason, we bask in the luxury of having all three.

Do we need four symbols, to represent [0,1], [0,1), (0,1] and (0,1) distinctly?
Wrongfellow, Dec 05 2018

Surely those can be identified by putting different kinds of hats on the double U? (Not to be confused with W, which's standard name is terrible and needs to be changed.)

UUhy uuould it need to be changed?
