This could also apply to hydrogen power if that was a serious proposition.
Vehicles, and in at least one case a computer, can have stripes on them to make them seem sleeker and faster. They can also be stuck or painted on.
Electric vehicles may have received their charge from various sources,
including renewable and non-renewable sources. This probably breaks down as geothermal, oil, gas, nuclear, solar, hydroelectric and wind, maybe also biomasse. Most of the time, the precise source is likely to be unknown unless its locally generated, but if it is, it can at least be broken down to grid and guaranteed renewable. An application running inside the vehicle controls the colours of the stripes according to the source: blue for hydroelectric, green for wind, yellow for solar, purple for nuclear, orange for geothermal, red for fossil fuel. This basically amounts to bragging rights/virtue signalling.
Right now, we don't really know where our energy comes from via the grid and it would presumably be a mixture, but it would be possible to record this and communicate it to the software linked to the equipment controlling the electricity coming into the home and there are tariffs which allegèdly guarantee renewable sources. It could also very easily be adapted to hybrid vehicles, and in fact to domestic supplies.

Basically the same idea applied to electric outlets. The discussion there may be useful regarding marginal rates etc. [pocmloc, Mar 16 2026]

"Right now, we don't really know where our energy comes from via the grid"... I do (see link) |

I've proposed similar ideas but had some point out that in an electrical grid it's all one big interconnected mesh. But I respectfully disagreed, there's resistance in those power lines and if you live next door to a nuclear power plant, you're getting your power from that nuclear power plant. Anyway [+] for the general concept. |

Depending on how we set it, the car charge here comes off the solar panels or the grid. |

These stripes should be keyed to speed no matter where the joules came from. Who are you showing off for? Greener than thou? |
|

How easy would it be to wire these in to a set of switches under the dashboard so you could fake the colours depending on who you wanted to show off to? |

Exceedingly. I strongly believe that we should have power over technology we own. But there's also the honour system. |

Why not reveal the driver's history of traffic violations in color-coded displays that warn other drivers of the danger they pose? There's your honor system! |
