First, glad you're back! Brought back memories of that first major crash in March of '04, shortly after I joined.
As good a time as any to take stock.
My Tesla drives itself. Really. No hands, difficult stop signs with and half-blind left turns included.
The hottest companies on Wall St. include
AI, quantum computers and flying quadcopters.
mRNA vaccines changed the world (in good and bad ways), and gene therapies have started curing incurable diseases.
We're doing hundreds of space launches per year and will likely see at least land on Mars within twenty years.
Elon will likely be a trillionaire even before he figures out how to mine Asteroids.
Fusion, admittedly, is still next year, but who knows, maybe one of these days.
I used to keep track of how many of my ideas "got baked." I haven't in a long time.
But in this age of magic and science fiction coming to life while history rhymes, what is Halfbakery's mission?
Is there one?
Show it to me.

Don't do self-drive in the fog. They have a hard time recognizing obstacles (like pedestrians) in the fog. |

I just saw a guy with two metal prosthetic legs walking down the street yesterday, really felt like we're living in the future. |

sure, Ray -- but it's day and night (pun intended) in quality even versus a year ago. I don't really care about the LIDAR debate -- the larger point is -- are our "non-magic" ideas sufficiently new/creative in the world we live in. Can they be? |

I think there's, well, not exactly a proof but a kind of probability based argument that no human will ever set foot on Mars, so not that one. Fusion - postponed constantly. I'll believe that when I see it and I don't think it'll be the solution we might think, e.g. I've heard it would tend to cause its containing materials to break down and become radioactive (might be remembering that wrong). |

I don't know what this place is for but I'm glad to see it back. |

Does the hb *need* a "mission"?
I feel it's more the exact opposite: we gather here because we want to, not as a means to some "end".
It's similar to "blue skies" research; doing it because it's interesting, not because there is an expected payout at the end.
Elon needs to remember that he's (probably...) a human, & use his gains for good, instead of just adding zeroes to the end of his bank balance. Rich people used to fund scientists & artists, & build libraries & hospitals & stuff... |

I know it wasn't asked of me but if I may? Yes. |
|

Anything actually new comes from the fringe. There's no accounting for genius that's why it is actively suppressed in both the systems of education and business. |

//what is Halfbakery's mission?// |
|

To bawdily groan where no person has groaned before. |
|
| |
I think our mission is to give people a space to release their ideas among their own kind, thereby saving the rest of the world from being collared at parties and blasted with half-formed ideas they didn't ask to hear about. |

Finally, when I'm chock out of places to complain, the line is *open* ‼ |

... like growing cilantro on the coast of Thrace and marketing it as Coriander of Perinth. Except that's just a pun, so it's out of bounds. |
