Course On How To Be Wrong

We're always being taught how to be right when learning how to be wrong can be just as important.

Inspired by the link, a course featuring a series of scenarios where the students evaluate the validity of a particular thesis using standard scientific methods, reproducible results, critical thinking, balancing various pros and cons of outcome against each other.

Then as they students all come to an apparently correct conclusion, they're shown why they're wrong and to learn why to apply that lesson to other assumptions.

Got the idea since there's a lot of "Moon landing was fake" stuff out there now that we're going back to the Moon. Seems like no amount of evidence is changing at least some minds. This as an early school course might teach that knowledge isn't some social ranking badge, it's just application of logic putting ego and pride aside during the process.

Inspired by this. I said this had to be bullshit then I used scientific method, reproducible results, and found out I was wrong. https://www.youtube.../shorts/ccLUxJvViUA
Now do the same thing with a logic puzzle. [doctorremulac3, Apr 17 2026, last modified Apr 18 2026]

Again, you can reproduce the results yourself. Or you can just to a simple version with a bucket with a sticker or logo on it. Zoom in and see area around the logo shrink. [doctorremulac3, Apr 18 2026]

This is an admirable idea, but will face a lot of opposition in practice; people really like their ego and pride.

Sorry dude but that link is bullshit. Same colour my ass. The things people will believe because of some video blows me away.

//Sorry dude but that link is bullshit. Same colour my ass. The things people will believe because of some video blows me away.//

The guy getting all excited about it doesn’t help lend legitimacy to the idea, but test it yourself. I put up another link where using a simple graphic program like Paint or Photoshop you just copy one section of one face and paste it in the same section of the other face. Go back and forth, left to right, right to left. Only the skin, not any features which you'll learn why when you find out what's causing this illusion. Well... if you find out what's causing it that is, first gotta go down that "I might be wrong" rabbit hole.

Do your own test, takes a few seconds. You can then post about how overly confident some people are about their cognitive abilities. Hey, maybe you're right, maybe I am stupid, how satisfying would it be to post proof? Don't miss this opportunity!
doctorremulac3, Apr 18 2026

Pert: Exactly, that's the point. Disconnecting being right or wrong from our ego is kind of an awakening. My come to enlightenment on that was when me and the wife were at a nice restaurant and I'm chatting with the waiter about machine guns (typical guy talk) and I said Browning invented the machine gun and the waiter corrected me saying it was Maxim. Instead of being embarrassed, I remember I was like "Oh, that's right, thank you!" Instead of my ego being hurt I was happy to be corrected.

I've tried to apply that response to questions we face every day, removing the ego and justy saying "This is my best guess, I'm human and fallible, so if new information comes to light I'll change my mind."

This is coming up a lot because of the controversy about the Moon landing that I never realized was a thing and I'm finding that the flat Earth deal that I thought was a joke actually does have some believers. So instead of getting mad I'm just doing the best I can to learn myself and help others see things they might be missing but I'm selling it this way: "Hey, I might be wrong too, so let's look at the information together without hating each other."

Insulting somebody who sees things different is the quickest way to lock them into their view, ironically making changing their mind much less possible. So if I tell a flat Earther he's stupid, well, we're done aren't we?

Guy doesn't even understand the difference between a radius and a diameter. Earth's radius is 3959 miles.
RayfordSteele, Apr 18 2026

"Thinking, Fast And Slow", Daniel Kahneman, 2011. Pick up a copy used online cheap.

Basically, once a human has made a decision, the brain does not want to change that decision, even if it's something like more money in your pocket rather than less. What looks like free will to us is our brains telling us what to do.

       //Guy doesn't even understand the difference between a radius and a diameter. Earth's radius is 3959 miles.//

That was the first thing I caught too so I was very proud of myself for being patient and hearing him out. And his thing did make me take the time to make the attached demo thingy showing how proximity to a sphere changes what you can see on that sphere and the perceived size of features on that sphere, so he got my attention. He's wrong as hell, but I had to think about it.

//"Thinking, Fast And Slow"// I'll try to get the audio book. I do my "reading" while working out or taking a walk.

Now here's the reframe of this, one "space is fake" guy had graphics behind him and everything and was asking how the Artemus module would return from the Moon without any engines while pointing to the crew module, the heat shield etc. He asked "How does if fly back to Earth? Where are the engines and the fuel?" Then it hit me, if he had the wherewithal to put up a picture of the crew reentry module he's definitely seen the service module with the engines and fuel tanks. He's lying. He's a clickbaiter. He knows about the service module because if he can put up graphic of the ship he's seen graphics of the ship that clearly point out how the crew module is powered.

Now maybe he's that dumb but he can put Youtube videos together, very professionally handled the graphics, etc and I realized there's money in conspiracy theories.

I'll put the link up. I 'm not convinced, I think he might lying about not believing the Moon landing history and posting for clicks. Either that or the time of the movie Idiocracy has arrived.

After the craft leaves orbit its perfectly possible to return without any burns at all
Voice, Apr 19 2026

Yea, most of the energy to get to the Moon was from the initial burn, then they do the slingshot thing to get back, they just do some minor correction burns to keep on course.

Pretty cool, does the same orbital mechanics as a comet basically.

Oh, and I came up with a possible explanation for at least some of the Moonlanding hoax stuff. What’s more intimidating than the science involved in putting a man on the moon? The term rocket science is used as the ultimate thing that’s hard to understand and learn. “It’s not rocket science” is a common phrase using rocket science as the ultimate smart person endeavor. So how can you just with a quick flip of reality go from being intimidated by all these smart scientist guys to being smarter than them and not only smarter morally superior? Just say everything they’re doing is a lie. You’re smarter than them you’re morally superior and you’ve just risen up above people that have spent decades studying science.

Ego is something that’s pretty darn motivating. Denial of the Moon landing puts you on a pretty high moral and intellectual plateau with very little work.
doctorremulac3, Apr 19 2026

I'll be damned, there is an audio book. I've never made it more than a few minutes into one - I can process so much faster by eye rather than processing aural data that audio books annoy me. This is probably an artifact of speedreading training in my first youth.

The biggest fallacy of all is that there's such a thing as fallacies.

Fact: There's no such thing as facts

Fallacy: Fallacies are a real concept, they're not.

Myths: The existence of myths is the biggest myth of all.

Falsehoods: There is such a thing as falsehoods, there are not. Only truth.

Data: Another non existent thing that extensive research has proven to not exist.

//The term rocket science is used as the ultimate thing that’s hard to understand and learn. “It’s not rocket science” is a common phrase using rocket science as the ultimate smart person endeavor.//

Um, I don't think it is. "Rocket science" refers to a design or thing with the potential to go catastrophically wrong if everyone involved isn't extremely careful.
Loris, Apr 19 2026

"It's not rocket science" is an idiom used to express that a task or concept is simple, straightforward, and not difficult to understand or perform. It implies that the matter requires little specialized knowledge or effort, often used to reassure someone or urge them to focus on obvious solutions.

So an easy task would be unclogging a sink, a hard one for comparison would be successfully landing men on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth. So if somebody said "Where to I stick the plunger again?" you'd say (derisively) "It's not rocket science, you stick it on top of the drain." Then if you were a meany pants you might say "After that you can stick it anywhere you want." then if you were a really mean meany pants you might say "Which is what your momma said."

Follow and like for more tips on how to piss people off.

Yeah - I mean people might say that, if they didn't know better.
Loris, Apr 19 2026

Well, maybe with other cultures but in my neck of the woods it's used to say "This is simple, not complicated."

And here we go, I'm gonna practice what I preach.

I used the concept of a typewriter repair shop as an impossible business model in the age of computers, then on a whim did a quick search.

Right here serving the areas surrounding Silicon Valley where basically all modern computer technology was invented, an actual typewriter repair shop.

And no, I'm not going to be accusatory and say "Uh huh, a "typewriter repair shop" in Berkley where USC campus is and the most liberal hippie area on the west coast. Sure. Groovy man, let's go get our "typewriter repaired!" (making a weed smoking gesture)

Just poking fun, sure that's not the case. Good for them. Actually kind of cool.
doctorremulac3, Apr 21 2026

Typewriters fill that vinyl record niche for folk who want the finality of not having so many editing opportunities perhaps?
