Dumb Wardrobe
Why should the kitchen staff be the only beneficiaries? |

In my basement there is a collection of various laundry equipment, a washing machine, dryer, ironing board, various racks etc. Much of this is cumbersome and noisy, the basement is a good place to keep it all.
My bedroom has a wardrobe where clothes are, as is tradition, kept. This is also an ideal
location as most of the situations where my clothing state changes happen in this room.
In some houses, grander ones generally, there is a "Dumb waiter". Essentially a small lift/elevator for food to travel up from the kitchens and for dishes etc. to travel back down to be washed. I'm seeing a significant parallel between dishes and clothes here. Laundry chutes exist, but address only half the identified problems.
So, let's have a dumb wardrobe. Clean, ironed clothes are placed into the empty wardrobe, it's lifted up to the bedroom for use. Meanwhile, a second wardrobe, full of dirty clothes descends to the basement for laundry. Now no one has to waste valuable life endlessly cycling dirty and clean clothes up and down stairs where occasionally a sock gets dropped in the cat litter that lives at the top pf the basement stairs for some reason.

Is there a horizontal solution for ranch houses? |

Getting it to pass fire code will be the trick. My old house had a laundry chute but only because it's grandfathered in. These days I don't think they allow them due of the lack of fire breaks. |

It is! and while not officially human-rated, it could prove useful in a tight spot. |

We have the washing machine upstairs instead. |

I like it. I'd planned to do exactly this idea. We have a thirty room motel with two levels and the laundry room is directly beneath the staff room. Brilliant. |

Then somebody was selling a wheelchair elevtor for cheap and I opted for that instead, but still. (+) |
