Competitors run, swim or dig themselves out as the track changes from "liquid" to solid and back again at random.

See link. You blow air into sand and it acts like a liquid. So this track is equipped with these air blowers to turn the track into liquid at any moment forcing the runners to become swimmers. When the air is turned off, they're now buried in sand and have to pull themselves out and become runners again.

They might also be able to carry a boogie board and paddle and ski on it but not sure about that.

No matter what you think of the idea you really have to watch the video. It's pretty much the most incredible thing I've ever seen. (Thanks Rayford Steele)

       Addendum: The concept could be used for a wrestling ring too.

       //wrestling ring//
Expert level: the ring/tank is 3m deep. Hold your breath, dig out fast!
I always wondered if you can get the air flow *just right* to allow swimming/"floating", or is it always sink-to-the-bottom (humans being denser than air...)?

       // can get the air flow *just right* to allow swimming/"floating" // Yes, as demonstrated in the video, it's possible to do it in your back yard. Time stamp 8:20 shows a kid floating on his back. He starts low, then floats higher in the video. Also note the basketball floating very well, and listen to Mark's explanation of buoyancy.

       // humans being denser than air // but much less dense than the air/sand mixture you get by blowing air through sand at a reasonable rate. If you blast the air hard enough, yes you will turn the sand into a sandstorm, and you can fall through it, but in Mark's hot tub, the surface level of the sand did not increase noticeably when the air was turned on, so the density of the air/sand mixture was only slightly less than the density of the sand when the air was turned off.

       Thanks, [scad mientist]. I (obviously) wasn't paying attention (& I had the sound off...).

       I think I like the wrestling ring better. That's something that might actually happen.

       You know, the ring thing with a rotating liquid part would be interesting. I think there was a Star Trek episode where the combatants had to jump around a moving base while fighting.

       I take it Fremen sand compactors are banned?

       Yea, might be okay for the horror movie version though.
