This idea is for a giant disco ball to be placed in orbit around the Earth. It would need to orbit such that it was always directly above the longitude which lay about an hour after sunset. This would mean that most of the people able to see it would be in darkness but the disco ball, because of its
height above the Earth's surface, would be lit by the sun. If the angle to the sun were low enough, it would be lit by sunlight filtered through the Earth's atmosphere and would thus not just be sparkly, but sparkly and red.
