Yeah, I wish it made more sense too.

It's watching you.

A 2' x 3' frame featuring hundreds of mechanically actuated googly eyes that can look up, down, right, left or straight ahead. The eyes are broken into about 20 different sets of eyes all looking in a particular direction. No matter where you stand, there are at least 20 pairs of eyes looking at you because the entirety of the room is covered by all the sets.

Every few seconds they all shift, the eyes aimed at +20 degrees horizontal, -40 degrees from vertical would all move to another position, and a different set would move to cover their old position. Likewise, all the other eyes shift to different positions but there is no portion of the room that ever has no eyes directly trained on it.

The idea is, as you walked by, a set of 20 pairs of eyes would shift their gaze to you as if following your every movement. I believe our eyes are so attuned to being looked at that we'd quickly perceive the eyes looking our way as distinct from those not looking at us.

Now I'm not sure if this would work, but the principal is that, if you're walking by a crowd of people and ten percent of that crowd all turned to look at you at the same time everybody else turned to look somewhere else, you'd perceive that. I could be wrong, but if I'm not, this little piece or art would look like the little eyeballs were taking turns following you around the room.

I think it could be a neat effect.

This is quite possibly a brilliant idea.

Thank you Max. It occurred to that this concept could be checked out by making a gif that scrolled through the frames every few seconds. It could also be put on line as sort of a creepy magic trick where no matter where you stand in front of the computer screen you have eyes following you.

       If it works.

I think this may be kind of creepy. Just a wee bit though.
