((DAMN - just found the tailgating catagory so I expect this is already in there))
In the UK we have a semi official rule for how close behind you should follow. The safe breaking distance in the dry under normal conditions is 2 seconds.
This is as much a a plea to manufacturers as an idea for half
bakery.
I would like a sign in my back window expressing the current safety margin, for the driver of the car behind to read.
I would assume a rear facing Lidar can measure the distance. The car already knows how fast it is going. Hook it all up to an LED message bar and away you go. Add a rear view camera for extra points.
When the driver behind is too close you can have the message box scroll things like "Distance N.N Seconds" , or "You are currently below the 2 second safe separation distance" or "Evidence captured, reporting to police for dangerous driving if you do not back off"
Only vaguely related ...

Too funny. I'm sure the traffic enforcement folks manage that data feed effectively/s |

In the UK there are lengths of motorway with painted chevrons, and signs saying "Always keep two chevrons from the car ahead" or something like that. I think you are less likely to take it personally if the road tells you to keep back rather than the person in front. |

When the seatbelt rules were new, some people worried that people might speed more because they felt safer. I remember a suggestion that if you wanted drivers to be safe, fix a six-inch blade on the steering wheel. No-one ever did as far as I know. The equivalent might be to carry a long pole on your roof rack so the drooping back end was about face height for the person behind. |

This is all hypothetical, right? I am not suggesting anyone goes and straps a pole to their car. Or if you do, you ought to fix the dagger on your steering wheel too. |

Yeah ... one of those things I just never get around to fixing. It's probably out of warranty by now. |
