My car's roof rack whistles with a very loud high-pitched note. It's a constant frequency, so there's probably some sort of Helmholtz resonator, like a flute, going on, rather than the sound arising from vortex shedding, because the note would change with car velocity if it arose from vortices.

propose some tightly-fitting solenoid-operated plugs which open or block holes in the hollow roof rack bars according to signals from the car occupants, to while away those long motorway journeys.

I had a VW beetle that could be 'tuned' to make a massive bass whistle when the sun roof was opened just so and all the windows were closed. The entire care reverberated and pulsed with a 3 - 6 cps note. I miss it. |
