Smart Traffic-Light

Controls traffic speed and grants the right of way to calm driving

Sees far back before the light. As you approach the light speeding it turns red and waits for you to lose the time you thought you would gain from speeding. On the other hand if there's nobody on the crossing road, and your just going fast but not too fast for this road, it lets you through. A flashing blue light shows this is a smart light.

At night when no-one is on the road, and your not flying a plane on the road, it will let you through. When people approach it lets them cross while freeing traffic as best possible. When the cars are keeping a far enough distance between them it could show green and flashing blue light (which means maintain your speed) for both sides without even ever turning red!!

People would want to cooperate.

Springholm speed-activated traffic lights https://www.dailyre...ners-claim-29162803

They have these on the A75 at Springholm (Link). They look just like a standard pedestrian crossing. There's no blue flashing light, but there's a sign saying 'speed activated traffic lights'. I didn't notice this sign for an embarrassingly long time, and was puzzled why there were frequently no pedestrians to be seen despite the lights being red. It's effective for moderately speeding vehicles, but the induction loop is just before the lights, so the really fast drivers only see the amber and don't stop.

[bh] I am such a slow driver I never got stopped for a long time, but I noticed that there was no actually pedestrian places on the far side of the road, I used to call it the "crossing to nowhere". Since the limit has dropped to 20 I have been stopped however. Its kind of fun.

[poc] yes same for me; it's very challenging to keep to a 20 limit just after coming down from 60. I need to set cruise control. The penny also dropped that the people coming the other way probably aren't running the red light after all, because theirs isn't red.
