Solution to the "top posting" / "bottom posting" debate

simple software to sidestep the Netiquette issue

Especially in the newsgroup communities, users can be vehemently loyal to either top or bottom posting. There are pros and cons to both styles, but either one can be used incorrectly.

I propose a simple software feature added to Newsgroup and email client software that you can enable to automatically parse all messages, and convert them to the "correct" style before you even see them.

Please clarify. Is this about quoting? Or is it about whether the software shows posts in ascending or descending order?

The top/bottom posting debate only really occurs on those systems that are incapable of displaying a series of comments in the order they were written.

This was exacerbated by that 'nettiquette' faq that from the 1980's that mentions this as being as equally important as not calling into doubt the parentage of your correspondents.

You *could* write some software to cleverly parse the content of newgroups etc, but some stick-in-the-mud accessing these groups via some salvaged VAX cluster will undoubtedly get annoyed and persist the argument for as long as they have blood coursing through their veins.

So I happen to like Lynx - what of it?

God, this brings back memories! Do people still care about this issue?
futurebird, Jul 15 2008

... do they even use the term 'netiquette' anymore?
mylodon, Jul 15 2008

... not in polite social circles.

I'm not sure about your idea.

       > Especially in the newsgroup communities, users can be vehemently loyal to either top or bottom posting. There are pros and cons to both styles, but either one can be used incorrectly.

The thing is, there aren't just two styles. There is no "both".

       > I propose a simple software feature added to Newsgroup and email client software that you can enable to automatically parse all messages, and convert them to the "correct" style before you even see them.

I have always tended to split people's texts up and post my replies to different parts of the original message this way, so i'm a top- bottom- and middle-poster. I can't see how this could be dealth with easily, i.e. without detracting from clarity.

       I like the word *dealth*

//This is one of the great non-issues of all time// try top-posting on a few newsgroups and you will change your tune.

//I like the word *dealth*// its a perfectly cromulent word
CaptainCrunch, Jul 15 2008

Hmm, "dealth": A town in the Low Countries known for its phottery?

A lack of something in China?

The state of no longer being alilve?

Clearly there is a ceramic theme here. Urban dictionary, i suppose, not here.

Scott Adam's blog allows you to sort responses in descending or ascending order, or by votes from worst to best or best to worst. It's very cool!

I've seen some of those websites where bottoms are posted.
hippo, Jul 16 2008

Some people would prefer tops to be posted, owing to the secondary sexual characteristics associated therewith.

Sounds like you swing up and down.
