It relies on the phone having a replaceable battery
It could be a stack of batteries inside ATMs or at coffee shops.
You just swap the battery and they charge your previous battery.
You get a fully charged battery wherever you go.
They should be at trains and airports too
Would also work
on laptops that have replaceable batteries
FuelRod swappable battery pack
https://www.fuel-rod.com/ Somewhat baked for cell phones (it's an external battery used for charging that is swapped). Reviews are mixed. [sninctown, Jan 28 2026]
Powerbank Vending Machine

Consumer electronics with replaceable batteries is widely known to exist. I used to have a Psion computer that ran on two AA cells. |
|
| |
Rather than inventing a new universal battery standard, just have your cellphone powered by AA cells and be done with it? |
|

To clarify this idea is about batteries being stored in public places that can swap your battery with theirs. |
|
| |
Phone companies would hate this. Which is why it won't happen but should. |
|
| |
Could this also be done with EV charging? |

I just searched electric vehicle swapping |
|
| |
It's in China..I had no idea when I created this idea |

The EV industry really missed the boat by not getting together & creating a "standard" swappable battery system.
Assuming a "multiple small cells" battery system (small vehicle uses some, big vehicle uses a lot...):
1: No more long waits while (public) charging
2: No more "old battery" issues - sub-par batteries can be removed from circulation by the charging/service station
3: No "fast charge = less capacity" trouble - batteries will (nearly) always be charged slow & careful
4: If you get flat & stranded, anyone can bring you some charged cells
5: You can keep a spare set at home, slow charged & ready
6: Standardised, so can be swapped among different vehicles (eg. if you have multiple cars, especially useful for businesses)
I've never understood why this didn't happen from the
beginning. |
