The Balloon That Came Down Fighting

Hydrogen Balloon Missile Delivery System
  (+2)
(+2)

This is a balloon, drifting serenely in the stratosphere like a wayward party favour, but with a more explosive agenda. Suspended beneath it is a compact cruise missile equipped with diminutive wings for gliding, a pump mechanism, and a parachute for post-mission decorum. The hydrogen balloon ascends to lofty heights—say, 30 kilometres or thereabouts, where hopefully a distracted enemy won't worry about it. It loiters undetected, perhaps for days, buoyed by its hydrogen payload.

When the moment strikes, the pump awakens. It methodically extracts the hydrogen from the balloon, deflating it and transferring the gas directly into the missile's fuel reservoir. No wastage here; the very essence that lifted the assembly now propels its payload.

As the balloon deflates, the entire contraption begins a controlled descent. The missile's small wings provide lift, transforming the fall into a gentle glide, allowing time for the fuel transfer without undue haste or structural protest. Once the hydrogen is fully siphoned, the pump and deflated balloon assembly detach with a flourish, deploying the parachute to ensure a soft landing. Meanwhile, the missile ignites its engine—now brimming with repurposed lift-gas—and streaks towards its target, benefiting from the initial altitude for extended range, stealthy approach, and evasion of those pesky ground-based defenses.

I feel like we did this before, so point it out and I'll delete this copy.

I dunno about extracting the balloon's gas - it probably isn't worth it.

The idea of using a high altitude balloon as an invincible bomber isn't terrible (it was done by the Japanese in WWII).
More recently the Chinese were accused of using a large one for spying, with America having to scramble to shoot it down, so it may have some merit as a distraction, or low-key alternative. But they are rather beholden to the wind.

Also, your image isn't viewable here.

hmmmm, the image loads for me.

I guess you need an imgur account to see it. I got booted off of imgur for my covid rhetoric but I guess I got my account back at some point.

I can see it. Looks cool, but as I recall from the Chinese spy balloon incident, we saw it coming a thousand miles away but couldn't quite tell WHAT it was. This looks very much like a missile, which is not particularly stealthy. Missiles are radar reflective payloads, which is why 5th Gen fighters have internal missile bays. I'm not seeing how it's going to get anywhere near its target without being shot down.

Yeah, imgur blocks the UK. Because think of the children.

If you're looking to rage against government overreach 2fries, that's probably more appropriate.

As I understand it, shooting that high-altitude balloon down was quite tricky for the American military. It's probably harder for most.
Getting your opponent to spend a lot of resources on a countermeasure is sometimes a win in itself.

       I'm not in the UK.

Well, let's just say that Starmer's gonna git sum karrmer.

[+] Just for the explody. Compressors are heavy. Add valves, tubes, lines, etc and you might as well have used the missile part directly. Zero stealth.

       Terrible waste of a balloon.

The function of a harbinger is to arrive in advance of someone else, to make sure that this someone else will have all their needs met when they arrive later. I'm not seeing that functionality in this idea.
