insert the button and fold the thread end over the robotic finger, or insert a spool of thread. push the button and your button is fixed.

       Many sewing machines can do this, but a stand-alone device could probably do it better. A device like a stapler (2 at once for a 4-hole button) might be The Way, folding the tips of a small plastic-coated wire staple over the top of the button.
