ironic umbrella

An umbrella that makes rain noises when you open it.

It was raining this morning, so I brought an umbrella to work in the recently opened very large office floor to which my desk has been relocated. I have duct-taped it to a whiteboard near me, originally just to dry, but it feels surprisingly cosy, almost cave-like.

I have a little app that provides me (through earplugs) with configurable noise. I'd say "white noise", but that's not accurate, it's actually a mix of a whole bunch of different noises someone likes, from keyboard typing to hooting of owls.

But a lot of these configurable noise flavors are rain. Light rain, heavy rain, thunderstorms, rain on a tent, rain on a tin roof, you get the idea.

So, let's combine an umbrella on/off mechanism (i.e., opening the umbrella) with a little speaker and a sound generator built into the umbrella to make pleasant little rain drop noises, directed just at the person underneath.

Also protects against glare.

Owls optional.

Many years ago I saw a kind of cabaret act, the person walked through the crowd dressed in wellington boots and a raincoat, and carried an umbrella. The top of the umbrella was fitted with a sprinkler plumbed into a backpack mounted pressure tank of water (like those used for spraying by gardeners I suppose). It was really effective, they had their own personal rain shower all the time.

Probably less practical for use in the office though.

MIght be cool to be able to switch ambient sounds, get different feels. Sunny day with birds chirping, ocean waves with seagulls, night with crickets, stuff like that.

Or just straight up armagedon hurricane sounds.

All umbrella ideas approved, esp noise generating ones - see link for one of my own offerings in that regard.
