A Door Is a Man's Best Friend   (+4, -3)  [vote for, against]
Use modern scent identification technology for access control and law enforcement

Inspired by Tongue Prints

The latest technology being developed for use by the DEA and Homeland security is reportedly as sensitive to chemical compounds as some of the best examples in the animal kingdom.

Use this technology in biometric identification systems ranging from letting you and your family into your house to finding suspects in public places (by teaching the scent to the system as you would teach a dog by giving a piece of the fugitive's clothing)

cologne and deodorant could pose a problem.. simple solution, don't bath ... ew.

Interesting idea. Wonder if you could tick it with a dirty sock from the person that the door is keyed to.

hmm -- not worse then his cut off thumb :) But I think a dog will not let a burglar with a sock in -- we may need to add visual for door locks

v0rtexx -- does your dog still recognize you after you bathe?

added the "gait surveillance" link -- not directly related, but another thing dogs seem to know about their owners

Are people sufficiently unique-smelling to be identified like this?
-- kropotkin, Jan 22 2004

Based on dog hounds, I assume so, though I don't know for sure, of course

Richard Feynmann thought so.

Access: What if you come home after a few beers (you are normally sober), or hanging out with friends that smoke (and you don't), or had a saurkraut hotdog on the way home? Or worse, change your cologne/perfume? Law enforcement: This is what the crook smelled like, officer...

The idea is strange but it deserves a (+) on the name alone

I can imagine wives and girldfriends adding a (smell of my man)XOR(smell of all perfumes except mine) clause to the door logic.
