Vehicle: Car: Parking: Reservation
Allocated Parking   (+1)  [vote for, against]
Spot allocated to you as you drive in

For parking lots where it's difficult to find a space.

You are given a ticket when you enter that directs you to a specific spot. The computer has already checked that the space is clear that it's big enough for your car and that it's the most convenient space.

This systems eliminates:
Searching for a space
Fighting over a space
"WTF did I park the car?" syndrome
Valet parking woes

It also alleviates lining up for a space, because they can admit the next car before the previous car has left the lot exit.

A possible refinement: Parking abusers are clamped, towed or fined, but only after the computer system has automatically warned them as they leave the space.

Many station parking lots on the commuter lines into NYC use this scheme. You buy a season pass, and you get a space allocated to you.

Seems like a reasonable thing to extend to transient parking.

jutta: honor systems prevail at many if not most US parking lots, usually enforced with the threat of tow trucks. So I think the advantages of assigned parking will outweigh the misbehavior of a few individuals.
