And This Year's Massive Hoax Was...   (+5)  [vote for, against]
Every New Years day, we look forward to parades, barbecues and the unveiling of what was last year's conspiracy theory hoax.

Start a hoax, make it believable, sell books, have people visit talk shows, put up websites and New Year's day reveal it was all a hoax.

Use the faked Moon landing or flat Earth gaffs as models, pick something, make it plausible and go to town.

Here's the thing, it would get harder and harder each year to pull the wool over people's eyes with your annual farce, but so might other BS stories.

Help the public think a little more critically about things while having some fun maybe?

In a cunning double-bluff, trump might say something not from the back of alt-right corn flakes box .

NB it is only July, so 5 more months of this year.

Get Dick Clark or other famous dead people to announce these using that "deep fake" thing.

Eh, might be kind of a downer. This should be kind of fun.

Many, many people are already deeply confused, anxious and bewildered about what is and isn't true, and what they can and can't believe. Real news, fake news, fiction, docudrama and deception are blurring together ... no more just photoshopping some politico's head onto someone else's body, no, now it's full colour real time video and audio.

This idea will spread paranoia, distrust and cynicism. It will undermine the very basis on which society operates, sowing the seeds of the destruction of civilization as you know it.

Excellent. Time to learn how to Give In To Your Hate. [+]

Is it distrust or critical thinking?

That being said, I admit that the above line I just typed has a tinge of Charlie Manson to it. He famously said "Paranoia is just another form of awareness, and awareness is just another form of love.".

Easy to be a philosopher when all your followers are low IQ miscreants on acid.

Hmm. Good name for a punk band.

// It is distrust or critical thinking? //

It depends if you're for or against the message being promulgated, which depends on who you are (and therefore your point of view) and what the message is; which may not be what the sender of the message intends.

Just make sure you're in a position to get out from under quickly when the wave function collapses.
