Ask The Fish   (+3, -7)  [vote for, against]
you will meet a stranger who will take away a small amount of your money in exchange for a small plastic fish

"Ask The Fish" is a small plastic fish that you place on your outstretched palm and wait as the heat from your hand causes it to curl up. According to the varying qualities of the curl certain characteristics about your personality can be read.

In action it is exactly similar to an old novelty item (described in the first link), except for one main difference; attached to one of the barbels on Ask The Fish's head is a fine wire, which terminates in a USB plug.

This enables the companion programme to accurately read and analyse the more subtle details of the curl, that otherwise would be invisible to the naked eye.

Why not pair this with a Babel Fish? put it in your ear, it curls, the computer computes, and the fish whispers your future into your ear?

I'm clutching at straws here, but it would be good if it left warm wet circles on your palm, or occasionally told you that everything was going a little bit fugazi - but that's just me, I had a misplaced childhood.<winks at [89turtle]>

Ahem - you're supposed to be discussing the finer points of Fish Curling analyses! You can wink at each other over drinks later.

I'm reminded of that sketch in "The Meaning of Life" where there's that weird guy with the long arms "And it went, wherever I, did go!"

But yes, fish curling - very exciting - I don't think I ever saw the type of thing you describe - I do remember green slime/snot stuff that if you held it right and quickly twisted your hand, would stretch out fantastically long distances and stick to - and, if you got it right - retrieve - whatever you had aimed it at. They became less sticky over time (and got all covered in fur and detritus) and you had to wash them in warm soapy water to refresh them. I can't remember what these things were called, but they were reminiscent of frog's tongues, so might have had a name along those lines. Sort of mid '80s.
