Store more without eliminating potential counter space

For those of you who don't know, the backsplash is the wall between the upper and lower cabinets in the kitchen. With the average wall thickness being 3-4 inches, there is a lot of potential space for the storage of small appliances and objects in that space.

I propose having a seamless piece of backsplash that normally blends in with the rest of the wall but can be slid up into the wall above to reveal a compartment for extra storage. This space can be used as a spice rack or for a specially integrated appliance built into the unit.

Additionally, this concept can be used to keep dangerous items away from small children. Instead of storing knives and matches on the counter where kids can easily get access to, you could easily hide them inside the backsplash

So you want to put storage between the studs like the medicine cabinet in the bathroom? Great idea. (+)
