Turn the millenium dome into a beach

One of the things that really bothered me about moving to London especially after being in Sydney was the lack of beaches. London's many parks are good but they just don't really cut it. The millenium dome is a gigantic structure that is not being used. What I propose is to convert it into a beach with a sandy perimeter and a deep salty swimming area in the centre. The dome would be heated and blue sky painted onto the ceiling. It would be lit by daylight simulating lights to help everyone beat the winter blues. There could also be predesignated 'tanning sessions' when large UV tanning lamps could be turned on.

Not mention the big rocks instead of sand.

PS, snarfy: Pump it full of Thames mud for that other authentic British beach feel.

Damn [stupop], this is a great idea. Charge admission and the thing might pay for itself, eventually.

would Bin Laden like it if you don't want it Peter

Sand in the shoes and at picnics -- British, or not? Hmmm.

[Guncrazy] That looks just the ticket, except that I hadn't envisaged a see-through roof, this one could be open and sunny even when it's dark outside.
[PeterSealy] Missing out the quintessential feature of British beaches is largely the point of this - we won't pump sewage into it either.

Great idea [stupop]. Although I *like* British beaches - have none of you miserable lot ever been to Cornwall in the summer?

[stupop]: Believe it or not, that massive roof is retractable. When it's rainy outside, the two halves of the roof roll back together, and they bathe the artificial beach in artificial light.

I like it. Although the resulting comedown of a trip through dreary Greenwich after a day in paradise would be a kick in the teeth and no mistake. How about turning the sea bit into a large aquarium full of harmless animals etc? Heated water = corals and the like. Beautiful.
