Bicycle Running Board   (+2, -1)  [vote for, against]
“… It won't be a stylish marriage. I can't afford a carriage. But you’ll look adored upon the running board of a bicycle built for two … or three”

One or two bicycle passengers could comfortably and stylishly stand on running boards that extend outside the pedals, holding onto fixed handles that extend from the sides of the saddle. Balancing an uneven number of passengers would require riding a listing bike.

I was envisaging a narrow “board”, attached to the frame, around each pedal that would not require the skills of a stuntman to ride, while discussing foreign affairs or topology with the chauffeur.

OK, so like stunt pegs, but bigger, and can carry more people. Cool+

The frame tubing, suspension (if present), wheel size, pretty much everything on the bike would have to be oversized to cope with the extra capacity. Not a problem, just a consideration.

I can just imagine a bunch of young-uns hurtling down the hills of Yorkshire on a bike with skirting boards. How about a chandelier on the handlebars, to keep it higher brow?

Also, the boards could be detachable, with small wheels on the bottom. At the press of a button, the evil genius riding the bike can detach his minions on their skateboards.

Marvelous +

To balance an uneven number of passengers the running boards could pivot a few degrees along the length of the bike. This movement could be used to extend a counerweight away from the bike on the opposite side.
