Boombox Laptop   (+2)  [vote for, against]
Er... a laptop in the shape of a boombox. (or a boombox with a laptop built into it?)

With an tiltable LCD screen in the middle, a speaker either side and keyboard strapped to the back, the boombox laptop would be able to play CDs (loaded into a slot on the top), DVDs, MP3s, have a built in digital radio and an optional television. It would also be able to connect to hardwired or open 802.11 wireless networks and browse the web.

Since I, for one, would be willing to tolerate much more weight in this shape (hopefully I'm not alone), it could have a long battery life, provided by a large battery pack in the base.

Compaq Portable III
Sorta like this? [Cedar Park, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

More for the living room than the beach party, but this is starting to edge onto the right territory. [st3f, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

The 'portable' PC was baked by Compaq in the early 80's, although it predated CD-ROM drives.

Did I mention that it's also a boombox?

I can't help thinking of an Osbourne

Think "laptop in the shape of a boombox" rather than "laptop back in the time when they were the size of boomboxes" and you'll end up with something closer to what I'm thinking of.

Maybe I sacrificed too much for the sake of brevity but I feel that this would be primarily a consumer a/v device rather than a business laptop.

And you can still "download" all the music you want off the radio!

But a boombox is more of a shouldertop.
