Product: Refrigerator: Light
Chillumination   (+14, -2)  [vote for, against]
with thanks to 2 fries shy of a happy meal for the title.

Either:

Run Christmas-tree style rope lighting though the fridge shelving. This will lead to a more even distribution of light in the fridge and will prevent overstocking with booze from blocking out all the light. Perhaps program them to pulse.

Or:

Make fridge shelving out of a coated glow-in-dark phosphor material, so that the behind-closed-doors secret life of your groceries is played out not in darkness, but an eerie half glow.

Or:

Both.

[calum, May 02 2005]

has technology moved on or do people still play the traditional christmas game of find the dodgy tree light bulb?

would all this lighting actually warm up your fridge?

Make the interior walls out of the same plastic used in LCD backlights. Light it with a CCFL bulb to provide perfectly even illumination.

Could we deck the fridge with boughs of holly?

I'd like some high voltage spikes driving ordinary flashlight bulbs @4 cps., five seconds on, five seconds off to give me a relatively white light experience, where the food will seem to sit mid air while the background whites are blown out.

Careful, this is Peckinpah exploding fridges idea territory.

Or the fridge from "Requiem for a Dream".

I'd certainly go for the phosphorescent glow option. Or Mr Tindale's b) option with a supply of dry ice, so great clouds of vapour spill out of the fridge whenever it's opened.

Columns of bubbling ....

Lava lamp.

I'd feel underdressed without a flowing white robe and purple cone hat in the kitchen with all the dry ice vapours. Slo mo lava lamp effects at fridge temps. Awesome.

Gerald stumbled into the kitchen, barely awake, and grapsed the handle of the refridgerator door. He could feel the low frequency vibration through his grip and hear it in the buzzing of his jaw. He opened, and stared into...

...darkness. Stillness. Emptiness.

Suddenly, space was fissured by the flare of a electrical arc - a crazed blue path connecting the central antennae to the grounded chassis of the fridge. The sparks quickly became more frequent, and Gerald reached in, harmless high-voltage cascading over his hand, the Tesla coil lightning reflected to infinity between his tired eyes and the bottles in the door...

A walk-in freezer designed like 'Mother' in the original 'Alien' movie, complete with ticker-tape sounding blinking lights in the entryway.

Behold, what miracle of refrigeration appliance has been bestowed upon my personal abode.

Behold, what ugly black cord chains it to my wall. Here, I cut thee free!

Grab me a beer while you're in there ... don't forget to holler "clear!"

I once saw a prototype open-air fridge (and I'm sure I wrote about it here before). It was a series of round rotating shelves connected through the center. Above them, around the circumference was a cold air generator that pushed the air down and in, and at the bottom was a collector vent that recycled it (similar to the way supermarket coolers work). According the the tv spot, it stayed very cold inside while cooling the air around it very little. No doors - you could just take stuff off the shelves.

So the lighting here would be the ambient light in the room.
