Chimney Smoke Art Work   (+12, -3)  [vote for, against]
Use modified chimney smoke to create an ethereal art work

Factory chimneys can often be seen belching out copious clouds of vaporous matter. I would like to be able to install a device at a large chimney outlet to gain control over the quantity, colour and frequency of smoke emissions in order to create a new art work.

The device would consist of a computer controlled, palpitating orifice with colour spray injectors (environmentally benign of course). Pulses, along with sustained jets, would be possible in every imaginable permutation of colour. An installation featuring multiple chimneys would be my ultimate objective.

I suggest you simulate it on a computer first to see if you really, really, want to do it. It would be a pity to work through the likely environmental opposition and the certain expense and have it turn out to be not very cool. On the other hand, if it were spectacular, you might get a lot of community support. A local radio station could have a contest to select one song a week to belch along with. You could have a tourist-attracting beer festival at night with illuminated multi-colored smoke. Although white smoke and colored lights would be cheaper.

The technology you need is widely used for sky writing, so I don't think you need to worry about dhill's objections.

This reminds me of a under-appreciated concept i came up with a few months back (linked). I like it though, and would love to see this surreal idea fill the skies (+)
