Desktop Punching Bag Web Challenge   (+3)  [vote for, against]
Someplace to take that flame war

Sometimes you'll be in an online chat with complete strangers and somebody will come in with less than pleasant comments. For stupid people, this would be be in the form of statements about sports teams like: "Anybody who thinks the Niners are going all the way should have his head examined!". For smart people it might be something along the lines of: "This standard model of the universe rests upon the existence of the Higgs boson, which is connected to a field that fills up all of space and gives subatomic particles, such as electrons and quarks, their mass. Any moron knows that!"

So what to do? Ax them to plug in their desktop punching bag and do battle. Each genius gets to a chance to prove their superiority over the other by how hard and fast they can pound on that padded sensor on their desk. The website it's attached to would show who's ahead be reading the blows per minute and foot pounds of pressure exerted. Basically like a carnival bell ringing thing you hit with a sledge hammer.

I love the idea of two geeks (me being one of them) banging on their desk as hard and fast as they can for purposes of... I'm not sure what. Proving their ability to bang on a desk.

The deluxe model would be an actual heavy bag with sensors so you could actually get in a virtual fist fight. (as opposed to virtually getting in an actual fist fight)

Surely a high-speed oscillating automatic sensor- pusher would be called for.

And I don't ax anybody. At least I haven't yet...

You could also have the bag move being controlled by the other guy's head. Both guys could wear some kind of head movement sensor and bob and weave while punching. Then instead of just boxing, you're defending as well.

Screw the flame war stuff, this would be fun just to go boxing on line. Get some exercise out of your online gaming.

Unfortunately the big appeal of gaming is sitting on your ass barely moving for hours at a time so this probably wouldn't catch on.

Going to need some good defenses against hacking.

This could be the end of the Halfbakery if it ever catches on. I think I prefer pedantic mocking if you don't mind.

I think I'm coming back to liking the idea of the padded sensor that you just bang on. There's something wonderfully primitive and futile about it.

Ohh! It could also be a mouse pad! Not that they have those any more.

Never mind.
