Give a Ficus tree braided around a stone engraved with the date and a small summary of the event leading to your giving the gift; anniversary, new baby, house warming, what have you.
The recipient is of course now obligated to continue to braid the tree as it ages around the dozen or so future event rocks that came with the gift.
You could even braid your family tree.
