Double Battery Cell Phone   (+4, -1)  [vote for, against]
Changing batteries is annoying, solve it.

I have a cell phone. Many do. It has a battery. This runs out. I can either charge it, or replace it with a pre charged battery I have in my separate charger. Unfortunately this means the phone is deprived of power and turns off. The restart takes forever.

Now, instead of having one 2600 mAh battery, imagine if it had two 1300 mAh batteries. Then, I could replace first, while the phone ran on the second. Then, possibly, I could replace the second one... for full charge. All while the phone stays on and the only size penalty is an additional bit of casing and possibly another battery controller circuit.

Might this come with two cups of coffee as well?
-- not_morrison_rm, Feb 26 2014

No, that would leave you with your hands full. Unable to operate your phone. This is more like two, independently-drinkable, half cups of coffee in the same cup.

Can't you just swap the batteries _really_ fast?

More seriously, you don't need a whole second battery, just a capacitor that can keep the phone powered up in standby mode for 30 seconds.

Could you keep the single battery, and just have the phone turn itself off when it's only half-full?

And then turn it on to use the other half? Nice.

A second entire phone with the same phone number. When both are placed in the charger the two phones decide which one needs the charge the most... and indicate the phone you should take and the one to leave behind to charge. The phone left behind mostly shuts down to avoid confusion.

Or the charger could do the deciding and switching, if would keep the phones lighter.

smartphones are already pushing $600, and you want to duplicate the whole phone?

My phone cost a hundred bucks and my computer is ten years old, but if my phone is plugged in charging I am stuck. I have to stay nearby. So 2nd phone or 2nd battery charging by itself seems useful to me.

I wonder what doctors and police that need 24/7 service do to stay live ? At least they would have no financial limits like we do.

er, you can get battery-powered battery chargers, which supply 5V... and are charged via 5V through some form of DC-DC converter trickery. I have one, and recommend them <link> but they're not so slick...
