Product: Umbrella: Handling
Ergonomic umbrella handle   (+1, -1)  [vote for, against]
Better umbrella handle design; less stress on wrist.

See link for image. Existing umbrella handles are usually the "U" type or the simple cylinder handle type. Both require the wrist to be at an unnatural angle whilst using the umbrella in its open (flared) state. Both designs are ok for holding the umbrella when it is closed. This design has the umbrella handle at a 135 degree angle to the rod -- much easier to hold when raining. Also easy to hold to umbrella is closed. Could be used for full-size or pocket umbrella (rod comes out of handle, then locks into the 135 degree angle).

I'm not sure your design would actually cause less stress on the wrist - putting the angle in would have the tendancy to cause torque on the wrist except in the (unstable) precisely vertical position.

One gust, and the system will tend to seek its minimum energy position, with the umbrella dangling around one's feet!

This could be overcome by a suitably positioned counterweight.

[+] for describing an open umbrella as "flared".
