Face Pillow   (+1)  [vote for, against]
A pillow for laying face down.

If you like to sleep on your belly like I do, you would like to get a good night's rest without a stiff neck.

It would be nice to have a face pillow, like the ones on the chiropractor's table.

It's a sort of ring shape, with your cheeks and forehead resting against the cushion, and your face in the middle hole to allow for breathing.

This would attatch to the top of a normal bed, not resting on it, so that your head wouldn't be raised above the rest of your body.

Pretty baked, except for the part about attaching it to the bed. http://www.officere...om/store/LF-002.htm
"It is perfect for people who would like to face-dawn for everyday sleep." [snarfyguy, Oct 17 2004]

There are lots of these out there. Google "face pillow."

I dreamt I was eating a giant donut, and when I woke up . . .

It would offer a pleasing new spin on the old, "I dreamt that I was eating a giant marshmallow, and when I woke up, my pillow was gone!" joke.

Damn you, phundug, you got there first!

"Nested" face pillows (See NESTED DONUTS) would be even softer!

Definitely a pillow snorkel or some other breathing apparatus, I hate breathing warm undercover air when sleeping.

You realize why the air is so warm and smelly under the covers don't you?

<Pericles' mom> You tell those guys that sleeping on your belly will only lead to a crooked back when they become older. Ask my chiropractor...he's been trying to fix my bones for months because of this. Human bodies were not designed to sleep on our bellies. Go on dear, tell them: if they want to still be able to walk when they're 60, they have to start sleeping on their backs, I'm telling you...</Pericles' Mom>

From the name I thought this was going to be something entirely different. This is actually a customised bed innit?

I was visualising a pillow that attached around your face kind of like a kindergarten daisy costume. This would be very handy for snoozing in cars (not while driving of course), on trains, planes, for catching 40 winks in the office, for narcoleptics etc.

Maybe it could even be a whole head pillow with a hole in the front for your face. Think of a rugby players head guard or a balaclava. Pad it out hugely, add flower petal motif and you're ready to go. No more fidgeting around trying to find a comfortable position. It would even have the added advantage of muffling noise. Sweet dreams.

I'm partway through Googling, but this is the first site mentioning a face pillow. A previous poster suggested that all face-down sleeping is hazardous, but that would not be true with the correct support. Physical therapists and masseuses use padded tables that have a hole for the face; when used with a pillow under the torso, these tables allow proper alignment of the spine.

It should be possible to duplicate this with pillows on a bed, and there would be a great benefit for those who can't sleep well on their backs. Sleeping on your side causes rounding of the shoulders---even if you use two pillows---and that, in turn, can cause problems for your lower trapezius muscles. The lower trapezius connects to the upper trapezius, and next thing you know you've got trouble with your neck and shoulders.

Ha, ha, google snags another one!

I bought one of the offerings that came up in a Google search. It is a long urethane wedge with a "u" shaped hole for the face. There is no support for your forehead, and little support against the sides of your face. That's a major flaw, because the weight of your head is mostly borne by your chin.

The other problem is that the wedge shape does nothing to elevate your hips. The result is that there is pressure curving the bottom of your spine.

Suggestions: Forget the taper, and use a rectangular block of urethane foam to support the sleeper's body. The sleeper's head should be supported by a separate "donut" pillow made of stiff foam or foam-topped plywood. The firmer structure would allow for air vents that would not collapse.
