GIMME A FISH! why?   (+2, -38)  [vote for, against]
what has a fish got to do with a bakery

i mean, its pretty obvious that it means bad but couldnt you use a different symbol related to bread? aaah forget it i'm just off to get one of those nice haddock-loaves... no? exactly!
-- panthaz paradise, Apr 03 2001

A fishbone was what I came up with when looking for "the opposite of a croissant". It would be something that's still more or less food, but smelly and undesirable to eat without being offensive or too graphically complex.

It doesn't have anything to do with a bakery. Maybe it got dragged in from the halffishmonger next door; maybe it just symbolizes my desire for the out-of-place ideas that collect it to go away.

Amazingly, "halffishmonger.com" isn't taken. Nor is "halffishmongery.com"!
-- wiml, Apr 03 2001

Like [Rods Tiger], I guess I always assumed it had something to do with "loaves and fishes".
-- egnor, Apr 04 2001

No, that's accidental.

Yes. We must.

fairly accurate, but there's no need to just come out and SAY it
-- panthaz paradise, Aug 03 2002

I'm just contrary, heh heh.

Perhaps moldy bread, instead of a fish? Nah, for two reasons: too hard to represent as a sketch/icon, and certain moldy bread turned out to be a Good Thing! (penicillin is a bread mold)

A fallen cake, though.... :) -- perfectly fitting for Ideas that fall flat!

(But imagine poor Jutta, doing a massive search-and-replace of "fishbone" with "fallen cake", through all the text in all the HB files on the server....)

jutta, you wrote: "A fishbone was what I came up with when looking for "the opposite of a croissant". It would be something that's still more or less food, but smelly and undesirable to eat...." Did you know that some fishbones are quite edible? Open up a can of mackerel some time (definitely smells fishy!), drain the liquid, and dump the rest onto a large plate. You will see mostly whole fish bodies (heads and tails and inner organs removed), including bones. But these bones are soft, chewable, and a good source of calcium. Doesn't taste as good as the fish, though -- and they disintegrate so easily it makes me wonder why the fish bothers to grow them! Perhaps I am missing something, such as some aspect of processing --cooking?-- during canning.

Anyway, I usually empty a can into a bowl, add a big glob of mayonaisse-based "sandwich relish", and mush/mix it up thoroughly, then eat with crackers. Could almost qualify as Hors D'Oeuvres, if the fish-odor was less intense. The bones are completely undetectable in that mixture, and I can always fix my breath after I'm done eating.

we always said fish was good for the brain. just try singing now, Vernon, for the complete effect. you given up smoking yet?
-- po, Oct 03 2003

My dog eats the bones too, but she ain’t smart.
-- pluterday, Oct 03 2003

po, what does singing have to do with fish? (also, I have always been a complete nonsmoker).

It occurs to me to note that if the "fallen cake" notion was adopted, as suggested in a prior annotation, then the current vertical orientation of the vote-icons would probably have to be changed to horizontal (STACKED vertically, though, when more than one are displayed). Fortunately, a croissant looks the same, in either orientation.

singing livens up the mind too. I doubt that you need it though.
-- po, Oct 03 2003

Vernon, what you describe is, to me, as inedible as pieces of arsenic laced concrete.
-- bristolz, Oct 03 2003

I'll grind your bones to make my bread!

I've found jutta's anno interesting. This qualifies as HB lore, so I'm not voting on it.

[po], [vernon], what does singing have to do with fish?

Yeah, come on all of you, big strong men,
Uncle Sam needs your help again.
He's got himself in a terrible jam
Way down yonder in Vietnam
So put down your books and pick up a gun,
We're gonna have a whole lotta fun.

And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die.

I'm strangly relieved that it didn't come from loaves and fishes.
