Vehicle: Road: Intersection
Go signs   (+14, -3)  [vote for, against]
You've heard of stop signs, well...

A regular occurrence at an instersection in my neighborhood prompted this idea. Where stop signs exist to stop traffic on one street but traffic on the intersecting street is allowed to flow without stopping, the vehicle travelling on the "don't stop" street often does stop.

This makes for awkward moments when I am stopped at the stop sign and attempt to obey the law and yield the right of way to the vehicle that stopped unnecessarily.

I suspect that they do this because they are not aware that there are stop signs for the traffic that is crossing their path and they are attempting to be courteous and safe drivers.

Remove the potentially confusing condition by placing big green "Go" signs at the appropriate points in the intersection to indicate that the traffic on that street does not have to stop.

I have seen the same behavior but never thought about "go" signs. Heh.
-- bristolz, May 06 2002

I like it save for one thing - others would find my shortcuts aplenty.
-- thumbwax, May 06 2002

I concur with the honourable member from Queensland. It's not out of confusion about whether I should stop that causes me to slow at such intersections. It's concern that those drivers who do have the stop signs won't.

I'm in favo(u)r of less signage, not more. Can't croissant this.
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

I'm in favor of clarity. Slowing's fine, it's the coming to a complete stop, as mentioned in the idea, that's the problem. The solution proposed is a good one.
-- bristolz, May 06 2002

No, it's not.
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

Yes, it is.
-- bristolz, May 06 2002

The institution of Go signs would create a whole new slate of stickers that would be posted on the signs.
-- beauxeault, May 06 2002

I'll vote for these signs if I get to collect $200 every time I pass one.

(Is not.)
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

Is.
-- bristolz, May 06 2002

Well, in the event that both parties "go," it seems to me that the one most likely to be caught in the side (and therefore far more likely to be injured) will be the crossing "stop" lane. Of course, this is only a rule of thumb. But at least it'll give people more of a reason to stop at a stop sign rather than stopping at a go sign.

If you see what I mean. I'm not sure I do anymore...

shriveling singage up our asses?

Reminds me of the time my housemate tried to...
-- yamahito, May 06 2002

Would you get a ticket if you didn't come to a complete go?

(Isn't.)
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

Since [waugs] has been reduced to parenthesis, I win. Yay me.
-- bristolz, May 06 2002

Curses.
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

(Woman, just pulled over by a police officer) "Is there a problem officer?"
(Police Officer) "Yes Ma'am. You failed to proceed through the Go sign at that last intersection."
(Woman) "But officer, I didn't come to a complete stop...."
(Officer) "Tell it to the judge, Ma'am."
-- phoenix, May 06 2002

Aha. See? There it is. Problems abound.

I have seen "No Stopping" signs. Could these suffice?
-- waugsqueke, May 06 2002

How fast do you "have" to go through this proposed sign, does the national speed limit still apply, or can you scream through as fast as you want?
-- kaz, May 06 2002

OK. but
"You-have-the-right-of-way- but-you-shouldn't-feel- pressured-by-anyone-or-anything-to-actually-drive- through- this-intersection.-You-have-the-right- to-stop- here-if-you-feel-led-to-do-so.-Proceed-at-a- pace-with- which-you-are-comfortable-in-light-of-your-personal- experience-and-driving- habits-and-in-consideration- of-the-posted-speed-limit. -At-all-times,-please-keep- in-mind-that-the-above- is-only-a-suggestion-and-is- not-intended-in-any-way-to- insult-your-intelligence Signs"
doesn't quite roll off the tongue like "Go Signs"
-- half, May 07 2002

Nope. Sure doesn't. Your username is making less and less sense, by the way.
-- bristolz, May 07 2002

If I could change my name now I think I'd shorten it and get rid of the _ to make it easier on people who are typing it. "half" has a nice ring to it.
-- half, May 07 2002

Go for it. I half double-dareya'

I double-dog dare ya

. . . and so, the legend goes, on that dark, cold night, [half_crazy] became [half].
-- bristolz, May 07 2002

hey I liked you the way you were, put it back.
-- po, May 07 2002

Reminds me of "The Dark Half" by King.
-- waugsqueke, May 07 2002

Why not just put up a sign that says "Right of Way"...? "Go" scares me a little, just thinking about how some of the less intelligent people on the roads would interpret it.
-- Pseudonym #3, May 09 2002

Baked (sort of). In Europe a yellow diamond is sometimes used to mean 'right of way street'.
-- andrewm, Jul 27 2002

Certainly signs that read "RIGHT TURN NO STOP" are baked. Probably other variants as well, depending upon the intersection design.
-- supercat, Jul 27 2002

I don't think "Go Signs" will make an appearance anytime soon. The driver's manual (that thing I studied to pass the state-administered test years ago) stated that the traffic laws do not state who has the right of way, but state who shall yield the right of way. Drivers shall yield to emergency vehicles. Late arrivers at a 4-way stop shall yield to other vehicles already there.

I suppose the closest thing I've seen is a yellow "Keep Moving" sign for a right turn on to a road that gets its own lane (no need to merge for a 1/2 mile or so) that I travel every day. About once a month some numbskull stops anyway. Sigh.
-- RooneDitoff, Mar 03 2004

"The institution of Go signs would create a whole new slate of stickers that would be posted on the signs."

Exactly. Go signs scream out, "Write something on me!" Polite versions of what you would soon find tacted onto Go signs could include...

GO jump in a lake. GO fly a kite. GO BLUE! GOne fishin'. GOne crazy!
-- Bamboo, Mar 03 2004

do not pass GO
-- joking victim, Mar 03 2004

I'd be afraid that the STOP sign for the crossing traffic had fallen over or been hidden.

Thus, the GO sign should have electronic sensors to make sure the opposing STOP signs are in place. If they're not, the GO sign should squiggle the G into an SL so it reads "SLO".
-- phundug, Mar 03 2004

GOTO 10
-- riskyrisk, Mar 04 2004

There are a number of shopping malls in the Phoenix metro area where the equivalent of "Go" signs exist today. Traffic entering the mall road system from the normal city roads always has the right-of-way, while traffic already driving in the mall area must stop & yield.

Most of these malls have found "Go" signs necessary for the entering traffic, although they don't say go. One mall in particular (Arizona Mills) went with the rather cryptic "All lanes are free flow" (which I'm convinced utterly confuses most drivers). Other malls (e.g., Fiesta) have chosen the more straightforward "Do Not Stop".

Interestingly, I think some malls also needed to alert the yielding drivers to this unusual traffic convention and installed signs that read "Cross traffic does not stop".

But if you're shopping in Phoenix, stay on your toes. At least one mall (Chandler Fashion) bucked the local trend and uses the more traditional All-Way Stop.
-- eric dickinson, Jun 26 2007

Great Idea. I've wasted a lot of time waiting for those Stop signs to change to "Go".
-- i_am_patch, Jun 27 2007

Used sparingly at intersections that really need it, this would be helpful.
-- Noexit, Jun 27 2007

Small Rant: In my area there are signs announcing intersections that are "4-way-stops". I don't get it. Everyone has to stop, what's the problem ? Warn me if the intersection that I'm approaching will have cars that have a different priority level than me (don't have to stop), but why do I need to be notified that all the cars will be stopping ? It's much more dangerous If you are at a 2-way stop and inadvertently head out into traffic that does not have to stop !
-- i_am_patch, Jun 29 2007

I always rage against folks who stop unnecessarily, as incoming traffic or in the right-of-way, whichever way I'm traveling. Accidentally stopped at an intersection today when only the opposed direction had signs. I felt like a boob, and realize that I would have been right to rage against myself (perhaps I did). An obvious "GO" sign would have prevented my angst. [+]

Don't you ever entertain the dark suspicion that, although you have right of way, yet the driver now approaching from your right is thinking about auditioning for the Blues Brothers?
