Phoenix, Kingman http://www.alascon.com/arizonamap.gif
Phoenix is cleverly hidden under the large words [VALLEY OF THE SUN]. My mother lives in Kingman, upper left side of the map. I live about six inches to the lower left, suspended in space at the side of your monitor. [normzone, May 17 2005]

Up to some sort of HalfConnery no doubt! http://k-srasra.blo...ion-phoenix-az.html
(fixed) [k_sra, Jun 27 2005]

I'm going to AZ to visit my ailing mother in a couple of weeks, before it gets too hot out there.

Phoenix in June ? You are hereby commended for your halfbaked spirit, and simultaneouly scheduled for a psych exam and additional intravenous fluids.

Robinism and myself are over here in San Diego. You guys should hook up in Phoenix, and then rise from the ashes and go to the beach.
-- normzone, May 17 2005

That gives me an idea for an activity. See if you can bake a croissant on a rock.
-- Worldgineer, May 17 2005

You can fry (okay, cook) an egg on the sidewalk. There's always at least one local news yay-hoo that does it every summer. It may not be quite hot enough yet in June.
-- half, May 17 2005

been to a few halfcons. so jealous - I want to be at this one.

hold it in London ( buggar the olympics ) hold it in London...
-- po, May 17 2005

Can they still call it HalfCon Arizona if they do?
-- normzone, May 17 2005

They wouldn't be able to call it [half]con.
-- half, May 17 2005

Trademark infringement ?
-- normzone, May 17 2005

False advertisement. I wouldn't be able to make it to London. Unless it was the London Bridge, in Lake Havasu City, AZ.
-- half, May 17 2005

Been there. Hell, I'm trying to figure out if my mother will live long enough to allow me postpone my visit until June.............
-- normzone, May 17 2005

Sorry to hear that about your mother.
-- half, May 17 2005

Well, she'll either fade soon or hang around for twenty more years, no telling which. Thanks for your condolences.

She's a character. Think of me, only smarter, nicer.....crazier by an order of magnitude.Oh yeah, it helps if you visualize hot senior brunette [edit] gone to silver.

//upcoming HalCon in Phoenix, Arizona.//
Are we all gonna wear nametags that say "Hal" on them?
-- AfroAssault, May 18 2005

NormZ, I am sorry to hear about your mom's sitch as well. Of course I'd love to meet you and I sincerely hope you can make it anyways, but please don't let your mother die alone. I couldn't live with myself if we robbed her of her one last joy: seeing you. Maybe you could send her a picture. (jk)

Yes, Hal, we're all going to go by Hal for the whole weekend. By the way, have you called Hal yet? He said he talked to Hal about going to Hal's for dinner. If that doesn't work out we could take Hal and Hal out to a movie.
-- k_sra, May 18 2005

I hope that you all enjoy your HalfCon as much as we've enjoyed the UK ones. Good luck!

[edit after reading later annos]
You're gonna need it.
-- DrBob, May 19 2005

There's a Mexican restaurant just up the street that was, until recently, named "Hal O Peno's". All the neighborhood folk still call it that. It wasn't a typo, we're meeting there. :)
-- half, May 19 2005

Good snickerdoodles. I think it's still there. I didn't really pay attention when I was by there the other day. The one I've been to is @ 19th Ave & Greenway.
-- half, May 19 2005

The story behind the name, as I heard it, was that the owner had two daughters by two different wives: one Mexican, one Chinese and the place was named for the daughters. Dunno if it's true, I've never met any of them.

I checked the online phone directory. The restaurant appears to still be there. The people I went there with seemed to be more interested in the snickerdoodle cookies than anything else.
-- half, May 19 2005

Half Chinese half Mexican? Sounds an ideal place for a HalfCon. Maybe we should get in touch with them. I seriously need a map of the area...
-- k_sra, May 19 2005

I love Arizona gun laws. As long as some part of it is visible, it's legal to carry a firearm there.

You see mostly people working in the sticks carrying their working piece, or formally dressed persons carrying pearl handled show pieces. Not many others in-between take advantage of the opportunity.

There are signs on the doors of the major stores asking you to please not bring your firearms in while shopping, and it's illegal to take them into bars or banks.

Me, I can't resist strapping on as soon as I cross the border into Arizona. It's a privelege I don't get often here in California.

Will we be permitted to carry at the HalfCon ? I am well behaved, and I can provide references.

[edit] I feel like a girl looking for a dress to wear to the prom - I might get to go shopping for new gunleather.
-- normzone, May 19 2005

I don't see why not. We could go to a shooting range, like that one up north a ways, or that bar down the street.
I wouldn't mind shooting my .45 again.
-- AfroAssault, May 19 2005

Suggested answering machine message: "I'm not home right now, I've gone off to the desert to meet a bunch of strange people I met on the Internet that are bringing guns. If I'm not home on Monday it probably isn't even worth looking for me."
-- Worldgineer, May 19 2005

Oh, I don't want to SHOOT guns, I just want to carry them. I'm still dealing with filthy revolvers from the LAST time I went to the range.

I despise cleaning guns - it would be more fun to wash crusty pots and pans.
-- normzone, May 19 2005

There must be a way to attend, I mean it's only half a continent right?
-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, May 20 2005

// There's a Mexican restaurant just up the street that was, until recently, named "Hal O Peno's". //

There's a Mex place in New Haven CT called "C. O. Jones".
-- waugsqueke, May 20 2005

[wags], they must've had some to name it that.
-- Zimmy, May 27 2005

I'm confused, is wags, wags, or is wags, waugs?
-- blissmiss, May 27 2005

[Bliss], please excuse [Zimmy]... wags is wags.
-- daseva, May 27 2005

perhaps waugs is working wags?
-- po, May 27 2005

(I'm selling T-shirts to our Crazy HalfCon. See Link.)
-- k_sra, May 27 2005

No working wags is waugs.
-- blissmiss, May 27 2005

If these had come out a few days earlier, I could be wearing one in AZ this weekend. I'm flying out to visit my family. I know, when you actually bake something, you have to wait for it to cool before serving it.

I'll order when I return next week.
-- normzone, May 27 2005

Aw, shucks. I wish you could be there.
-- k_sra, May 27 2005

[HalfCon Perimeter Scouting Report: Kingman, Arizona...]

Weather was nice, in the low nineties, with scant humidity.

My mom is doing as well as can be expected, considering that she's my mom and a 'baker at heart. She says the stroke only affected her french, spanish, and math.
-- normzone, Jun 01 2005

Gah! You had to plan this months after I move back to California. Worse, I'll be in boot camp in Texas while the Con goes down. :(

How about a Deep South HalfCon in a couple of months?

Edit: Didn't know there were other Bakers here in SD.
-- disbomber, Jun 02 2005

I like the deep south, [disbomber]. Just not in late summer... please send a postcard, though. You're in my prayers. : )
-- k_sra, Jun 06 2005

I'll be wearing my Halfcon shirt and attending in spirit. Hell, I'll be attending to the spirits...
-- normzone, Jun 20 2005

I [linked] a pic of the HalfCon. We're all (ok, I am) grinning like idiots. It must have been fun! : )
-- k_sra, Jun 27 2005

Linky no workee. Sniff.
-- bristolz, Jun 27 2005

Really? Works for me. I hope I'm not the only one. Try again...
-- k_sra, Jun 27 2005

It looks like a permissions problem, [k_sra]. You may be the only one who can see it.

That doesn't work for me, either, [waugs].

In either case, "Access Denied."
-- bristolz, Jun 27 2005

Go to [k_sra]'s blog and click the image. You can get there from her user page.
-- Worldgineer, Jun 27 2005

I changed the link. If it doesn't work this time I will personally describe the picture in a thousand or more words for you personally. [link]
-- k_sra, Jun 27 2005

//It looks like a permissions problem//
I've seen that a few times. Some blog-type servers won't allow direct linking to an image.
-- angel, Jun 27 2005

TRY THE LINK. IT TASTES LIKE CHICKEN!!!
-- k_sra, Jun 27 2005

Yes, I've tried it, it works fine now. I was just sayin'.
Incidentally, why are you drinking detergent?
-- angel, Jun 27 2005

Uhm, I think [half] slipped it into my drink...
-- k_sra, Jun 27 2005

Who is who in the pic?
-- waugsqueke, Jun 27 2005

Left to right is Tara (not on HB), [half], [Afro], [Letsbuildafort] and [k_sra].
-- angel, Jun 27 2005

Thanks, [angel]. you're an... angel. : )
-- k_sra, Jun 29 2005

Woah! You guys actually exist?!?! <runs off, somewhere, anywhere, needs time to think>
-- daseva, Jun 29 2005

//[Bliss], please excuse [Zimmy]... wags is wags.//
Quite awhile ago I thought there was some anno by either [wagster] or [waugsqueke] mentioning how they had reincarnated themselves with a like name on the 1/2B. Until now, I believed [wagster] = [waugsqueke].

My apologies.
-- Zimmy, Jun 30 2005

apologies mfd as it's probably neither, possibly blissmiss!

it hardly matters as we all slot together like lego and make up a mad quantum escherlike jigsaw-type fractal picture all sinking in custard and swilling in chocolate flavoured explosive hamster-contaminated beer.

don't you just love the place!

btw, I would write but your email address is too quantum physics for me to decipher :)
-- po, Jun 30 2005

[po] My brains must be leaking out. Solving the cipher as the instructions indicated yielded an incorrect e-mail address. I updated it a few min.'s ago.
-- Zimmy, Jun 30 2005

//mad quantum escherlike jigsaw-type fractal picture all sinking in custard and swilling in chocolate flavoured explosive hamster-contaminated beer.//

[po], have I told you lately I appreciate you? : )
-- k_sra, Jul 05 2005

I would be tempted to apply for an account under the name [wagsqueke], were it not for the fact that [jutta] would turn me down. And probably suspend me.
-- wagster, Jul 05 2005

That's the same reason I don't apply for the [jutta] account.
-- Worldgineer, Jul 05 2005

I want to be [netherworldgineer].
-- daseva, Jul 05 2005

I'm actually [reensure] in a silly hat.
-- Detly, Jul 05 2005
