Halfbakery: Notification
Halfbakery Emails   (+16, -2)  [vote for, against]
notify people by email to halfbakery updates

It would be great to have a daily halfbakery email sent out with all the latest halfbakery submissions and short descriptions. Also, it would be nice to have a quick link that said "Email me whenever someone adds to this idea." That way people could keep on top of discussions for ideas that they're interested in.

I'm unlikely to do it, but since the halfbakery publishes RSS, places like my.userland.com could offer email notification as a general service.

Also, there are webpage monitoring services that can already easily send you email when an arbitrary web page changes.

Yes, but it would be much nicer, more accurate, immediate, etc. if it was done by the site itself. I'm willing to set it up however, if you don't mind me crawling the server.

Wait until we have XML transaction log digests, then build on top of those if you like.

aswartz: can you e-mail me when you get this working?

and I thought this would be an idea to let all HB users have @halfbakery.com email acounts...
-- RobertKidney, Aug 24 2001

That really would be cool - hippo@halfbakery.com - Hmm!
-- hippo, Aug 24 2001

Hosting email would probably cost Jutta lots of money...I like the idea too, but not at the cost of turning the .5Bakery into a commercial site...
-- StarChaser, Aug 25 2001

How about adding an preferences-option for users who are willing to receive HB email, and adding a form for sending mail to such people on their info page? The page wouldn't reveal the user's email address; it would simply send an email there.

That's not exactly anonymous. All you have to do is send an email to that person and to yourself...
As it is, those who opt to be contacted indicate as much by virtue of content on 'User Page'.

// Hosting email would probably cost Jutta lots of money...I like the idea too, but not at the cost of turning the .5Bakery into a commercial site... //

I'd pay to get sadie@halfbakery.com. The halfbakery itself wouldn't be a commercial site, because the huge archive of ideas and annotations will always be free. But there's no harm in offering some extra services to those who feel like paying.

Besides, i'd love to see what jutta's site design looked like as a minimalist webmail.

(i don't need notified updates, because i spend too much time here anyway).

It would be good if I could receive all the separate answers that have string "[Inyuki]" by email, so I wouldn't be inresponisve sometimes, but the filtering capabilities in Halfbakery is enough I think..
