Halfbakery Hall of Fame   (+18, -1)  [vote for, against]
After a certain length of time long-time "best" ideas are moved to the Hall of Fame

Instead of having a "best" idea list that stays that way almost ad infinitum perhaps if an item stays at the top of the list for a specific period of time (e.g. 2 months?) it could be moved into the Halfbakery Hall of Fame giving other ideas the opportunity to make a push for the top. Maybe 2 months is too long. Perhaps 1 month at the #1 spot? Just an idea...

Ouch, Peter... maybe your first idea on your newly cleaned slate should be an "undo delete" function for the bakery...

Rolled out on the Pastry Board of Fame. I like the idea, especially if it's visible at the same time as the current Best. By the way, a few of the Best and near best leave me personally quite unmoved, even baffled. Cultural differences at work possibly. Example : I've never eaten a bagel, half or whole, with or without a cream cheese ring! Is it the same as a croissant? See what I mean?

This may be obvious, but one reason for retiring [best] ideas is that they have an advantage over new ones which might allow them to stay on top forever. People are abandoning and joining the site all the time, so old 'Best' ideas get a crack at more votes than their successors ever can (because new bakers vote for old ideas, but former bakers don't vote for new ones). The longer good (popular) ideas stay on the list, the greater their advantage becomes.

Of course, there's a chance that if I look at 'Film Noir Home' on there long enough, I'll want to vote against it. Nah.

I'd like to propose +200 votes as the criterion for moving an idea to the Hall of Fame (I love "Pastry Board of Fame") and off of the best page.

The figure 200 may be high. I picked that because no idea has reached it yet, and Panic PIN looks to hit the mark sometime soon. Alternatively, it might be better to use 100 as the figure, since there are a number of ideas that are encroaching the century mark.

I'd suggest that ideas placed there have their votes 'locked in'. Perhaps even the annotation function can be disabled... essentially turning them into static files. They'll become non-interactive museum pieces.

<aside temperament="ironic"> And really now, johng comes in and drops the hb's highest rated idea on us, one other mediocre idea and a single annotation, and then skedaddles. And his brain dropping continues to reign supreme. I ask you, is that fair?</aside>

No, it probably wasn't :-)

Nice one, johng! See what happens when you stop paying attention?

What about a corresponding "Halfbakery hall of Blame" for fishboned ideas ? The worst ideas go into the Hall fo Blame for month, then get permanently deleted.

I'd be sad to see my "Brain Swap Punishment" idea get canned this way, but there you are. C'est la vie.

I like this idea. I think the 'best' category tends to render the top few a bit top-heavy compared to the rest of the ideas, sortof like unpublished stock-options inflating a CEO's actual compensation, as it makes the good ones easy to find and vote for. I've been also suspicious of some of their voting totals. Are there really that many accounts here? Did people acquire one to just vote on an idea that they found off of a google search, and then were never seen again?

//Hall of Blame//
That'd likely get m-f-e, as it encourages trolling - one of my 1st ideas went somewhat along these lines
-- thumbwax, Aug 09 2002

I think this is very good, though you could use votes also. Say when an idea reaches 70+ votes, it reaches Hall of Fame status.

The negative vote is mine. This is the usual - complexity without payoff. If you're bored with the best list, great! So am I. Go look at something else.
