An extremely bright light kept behind the door fades up to full brightness slowly when people press the call bell. The light(not the lamp), obviously should be visible from the gaps surounding the door, or probably also from windows.
Additions suggested:
1) [FlyingToaster] suggested mist billowing out the door. Dry ice/water or commercial fog machine.
2) [MadnessInMyMethod] suggested the TARDIS sound for the call bell.

In fact what does interdimensional mean anyway? And where does the tunnel come in. In my experience when I got to the point that I saw the light at the end of the tunnel it turned out to be a train.
