International Hurricane Name Registry   (0)  [vote for, against]
Forget the Stars

I can picture a guy registering a star in his girlfriend's name for romantic reasons. I don't think a girl would register a star in her boyfriend's name. That would just be weird. So what's she going to do? Name a hurricane after him with the International Hurricane Name Registry.

I know you're thinking this sounds like Corporate Hurricanes [see link], but I came up with this entirely on my own. For a simple fee, you would register your name for the next hurricane that starts with that letter. It might be awhile until your name comes up if you have a popular name. Mine starts with O, I'd probably be first on the list :)

You can check to see if your name is on the regular list in my next link.

Mine's not... [ghillie, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

Atlantic Hurricanes ftp://ftp.nhc.noaa..../atlantic/prelimat/
Named storms that became hurricanes (arranged by year). [Shz, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

//Mine starts with O// - not according to your signature it doesn't.

I doubt there’re will ever be ‘S’ hurricanes.
-- Shz, Sep 18 2003

Shz... 1995. Tropical Storm Sebastien was followed by Hurricane Tanya that year.
-- waugsqueke, Sep 18 2003

Waiting for Hurricane Waugsqueke to hit the Eastern US...
-- PeterSilly, Sep 18 2003

waugs, partial joke: There will never be a hurricane named ‘Shz’. And partial serious: The odds of ‘S’ named hurricanes is very low. There will never be a hurricane ‘waugsqueke’ either.

Seriously... No more jokes on that topic from me. - Some folks aren’t as well off as they thought they would be in Isabelle.

You can be sure that people would evacuate if Hurricane DeathNinja was coming...
-- DeathNinja, Sep 18 2003

evacuate what?
-- po, Sep 18 2003

Their bowels.

It didn't need saying [DN], it didn't need saying...

Thank you [ravenswood] for the laugh. You are a clever bloke. I vote for naming the hurricanes after pets: Fluffy, Spot, Fido, etc. It would take the edge off.
-- k_sra, Sep 18 2003

taking the edge off might not always be desirable:

'yes, I lost my husband to Tiddles, five years back..'
-- yamahito, Sep 18 2003

[shz] They have an 'S' name for every year... [see link]
-- ghillie, Sep 18 2003

Does it have to be your own name? I'd quite like to see Hurricane Higgins have one last blast...
-- lostdog, Sep 18 2003

me too! what a lovely backview we were often treated to(o)
-- po, Sep 18 2003

I can't get onto the site to check, but, well, I mean - "Hurricane Ian" - there's just nothing intimidating about the name Ian, is there?
-- egbert, Sep 18 2003

[ghillie], the names are chosen in advance, that doesn’t mean there were that many storms, or that any named storm graduated from tropical storm to hurricane force. <link>
-- Shz, Sep 19 2003

eg, "Ian" is on the Fiji hurricane rotating names list.

Talk of intimidating names... how about the newly formed eastern Pacific Tropical Storm Marty? And if we get past J and K in the Atlantic this year, we'll have arrived at Hurricane Larry.
-- waugsqueke, Sep 19 2003

Is it a coincidence that the really bad hurricanes have female names? I mean, girls already have a bad reputation, but it's all talk: deep inside we wouldn't hurt a fly.
-- Pericles, Sep 20 2003

// Is it a coincidence that the really bad hurricanes have female names? //

It's not true. If you define 'really bad' as causing great damage, the three costliest storms in history are Andrew, Hugo, and Floyd.

If you define 'really bad' as intense, three of the top five (1st, 4th and 5th) predate the naming system. Second place goes to Camille and third to Andrew.

It might have been true at one time to say this, because prior to the late 70s, storms were only given female names*. Nonetheless, it's entirely coincidental that the worst ones currently are male-named. I imagine over the years it'll even itself out.

(*Except for a brief experiment with an Able/Baker/Charlie phonetic system in the early 50s - a Hurricane Charlie or George then wasn't really a 'male' name in that sense.)
