Also marked for expiry

Since the HB is, if not my second family, at least my distant clan of relatives who never come to Christmas dinner but get talked about in hushed tones, I just wanted to claim bragging rights on the fact that my daughter, MaxwellBuchanan Jr., has just got in to Cambridge to read physics.

Having thus bragged, I'll delete this fairly soon, so please don't write anything the deletion of which would be a loss to mankind.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

// has just got in to Cambridge to read physics //

We told Sturton that a set of lockpicks was a poor choice for a birthday gift. She may have got in, but can she get out again without setting alarms off ?

If she'd asked, they would probably have let her read it anyway, even without a library card.

Actually I have lent her my set. And I bribed the guards.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

Good stuff.
-- 2 fries shy of a happy meal, Aug 16 2012

How's come we never get any Christmas cards?
-- RayfordSteele, Aug 16 2012

oh very well done to your daughter!
-- po, Aug 16 2012

MaxwellSmart!
-- DrBob, Aug 16 2012

Congrats to MinwellBuchanan
-- hippo, Aug 16 2012

Read physics, does that mean study or teach? Greatness either way.

I have a seven year old daughter who is also smart so I have a little insight in the pure and utter hell you must have gone through raising her. It explains a lot.
-- zeno, Aug 16 2012

It means to study - 3 years (or 4 if she stays to do the M.Sci.)

And thanks to all for the good wishes!

I'll expirise this in the morning as soon as I get my fatherly pride under control.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

Why do in 4 at Cambridge what can be done in atleast 10 at Ministry recognized universities.
-- rcarty, Aug 16 2012

You'll have to share with us in order to pay for this adoration, however well deserved it may be.

Any advice for dads of 9 year old girls who want to have their proud moment at the HB announcing their daughter's acceptance to MIT or Stanford someday? [+]
-- doctorremulac3, Aug 16 2012

Yes.

Shoot The Boyfriend.
-- 8th of 7, Aug 16 2012

LOL.

Already locked and loaded.
-- doctorremulac3, Aug 16 2012

//Any advice// Resist with every fibre of your being the insistence of the school that your daughter grows up to become a balanced member of society. Nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished by a well-adjusted person.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

[Doc]- Go for RPI instead. For undergrad, it's a much better choice than MIT. Once she's got the bachelor's then any graduate work can be done at MIT.

And congrats to the youngster.
-- MechE, Aug 16 2012

//a balanced member of society//

It's also good to avoid becoming a balanced member of an unbalanced society.

I checked RPI online, it looks pretty cool. I'll put in in the possibility file and see where we are in 9 years.

Convey our congratulations Max. Good work.
-- doctorremulac3, Aug 16 2012

Thanks, [doc].
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

The world is changed and made by unreasonable individuals. Reasonable people go with the flow... as do dead fish and sewage.
-- UnaBubba, Aug 16 2012

Congrats to her and to you for (presumably) your input somewhere along the line, if only 19 odd years ago.
Just a thought - does this mean that we have the annual "Fruity sixth form girls smiling at A-Level results picture" on the front page of the Telegraph tomorrow?. Private Eye will have a field day!.
-- gnomethang, Aug 16 2012

I am sure you can count on the Telegraph, and thanks.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

Very nicely done.

Are we talking cat-in-box physics, Dr Spock physics, mushroom cloud physics, or some other boring stream?
-- Custardguts, Aug 16 2012

To Be Decided, but more likely the first two than the last two. However, I have encouraged in her a fascination with explosions and a cheery disregard of radiation, so who knows?
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

And so to bed. Many, many thanks for all of your good wishes. This message will self-destruct whenever I wake up.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 16 2012

Well done [MB]. Please, rather than destroy it, file it under...

Users: Egregiously Overweening Paternal Pride

or similar. The world needs more good news stories.
-- UnaBubba, Aug 16 2012

Good on her. I hope she gets to study all of the physics, and not just one physic.
-- sqeaketh the wheel, Aug 17 2012

w00t. w00t, I say.
-- ytk, Aug 17 2012

Thanks again to everyone for their good wishes. I'm still inclined to let this expire but, as per [Ubie]'s suggestion, I have moved it to "Users". But I'll say [marked-for-deletion] - Jutta is very welcome to remove it.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 17 2012

Well done daughter.

I studied at Chickenversity :-) I read eggs, feathers; learned to fear foxes; colonels with white beards, and developed my 'pecking order sofa' idea there.

Cambridge -- is that like your Harvard? :)

Congrats, MB
-- theircompetitor, Aug 17 2012

// Cambridge -- is that like your Harvard? //

It's similar … except that Cambridge actually has a history, rather than being a collection of shacks thrown up by second-generation colonials so they could have somewhere out of the wind to smoke, and more importantly the qualifications from Cambridge actually mean something.

Yes, both institutions have noted academics; but Cambridge has the likes of Stephen Hawking who employs his intellect to probe the mysteries of the cosmos, whereas Harvard's advanced syllabus tends towards flint-knapping, making fire, and the knowledge and use of edged tools.

It should be said in favour of Harvard that it isn't a drizzle-plagued village precariously perched on a low bank of mud in the midst of sodden, bleak, windswept fenland.
-- 8th of 7, Aug 17 2012

"Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge (formerly Cambridge Poly)" or the other one?
-- hippo, Aug 17 2012

Oh [8th] Don't forget that Timothy Leary went to Harvard and gave us all free LSD!!

Congrats to MB jr.!
-- xandram, Aug 17 2012

There's a certain Dr. Oppenheimer who would like a word with you, "numerically-named-person-who derives-his-monikor- from-the-imagination-of-a graduate-of-Columbia"
-- RayfordSteele, Aug 17 2012

What [Custardguts] said. (I always wanted to say that). Way to go miniBuchanan.
-- blissmiss, Aug 17 2012

Congratulations. Missed this until now, sorry.
-- nineteenthly, Aug 17 2012

'grats... what's "read physics" mean ?
-- FlyingToaster, Aug 18 2012

//what's "read physics" mean ?//
That means "study physics." No one knows why they don't just say that.
-- sqeaketh the wheel, Aug 18 2012

// "Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge (formerly Cambridge Poly)" or the other one?// T'other.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 18 2012

Oh, Squirrel Nutkin University, then?
-- UnaBubba, Aug 19 2012

Well done one and all. Finding the balance between hard study and weird student societies is the most difficult part of being at one of those places, I think.
-- pocmloc, Aug 22 2012

Why would you delete this? *Marked for sticky*
-- kevinthenerd, Aug 23 2012

Not quite in the same league as going to read physics at Cambridge but my daughter got her GCSE results today - 9 A* grades <suitable glow of paternal pride>
-- hippo, Aug 23 2012

Yay! Congratulations to the Hippolet - I'm sure she'll go far.
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Aug 23 2012

Nice one Mlle Hippo!
-- gnomethang, Aug 23 2012

if only I had saved my proof that p!=np for this opportunity. also congratulations
-- Voice, Aug 29 2012

Is this physics in the medical sense?
-- bungston, Aug 29 2012

//Hide the cat.//

Or don't.
-- BunsenHoneydew, Dec 30 2012

Who the heck boned this? The guy's proud of his daughter for Pete's sake.

My faith in humanity gets tested every day. First I read about an experiment where they put a plastic turtle in the road and noted how many people swerved to HIT it, not avoid it, now this.

A hearty "Harrumph" to the nefarious boner. "Harrumph" I say.
-- doctorremulac3, Dec 30 2012

So... 3.5 years on, how go Minwell's forays into greatness?
-- absterge, Feb 03 2017

She's now doing a PhD at Imperial in materials science - working on alloys for jet engines. Thanks for asking!
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 03 2017

Wow! Must have gotten her mother's brains eh?

(I kid)

Seriously, beyond impressive. Absolutely awesome.
-- doctorremulac3, Feb 03 2017

Tell her to science harder! It's 2017 and my flying car is still not delivered.
-- Voice, Feb 04 2017

//Must have gotten her mother's brains eh? //

As Einstein is reputed to have said when Marilyn Monroe told him that together they could produce the perfect child, "Yes, but what if it got my looks and your brains?"
-- MaxwellBuchanan, Feb 04 2017

Well, it could have been elected President...
-- 8th of 7, Feb 04 2017

//"Yes, but what if it got my looks and your brains?"//

Wow, that gives me an insight into something my dad always used to say. "Thank God you kids got my brains and your mother's looks and not the other way around."

Now I know where he probably got that from.

In case you're wondering, her reaction was always "Aaa shut up!" which I think was actually appropriately eloquent. They remind me of a vaudeville comedy team and have been together for over 60 years now. Gotta love 'em.
-- doctorremulac3, Feb 04 2017

60 years is impressive. My congratulations to them.
