NASA 3D stereogram   (+4, -1)  [vote for, against]
realtime 3D stereogram of the sun on the web

Two realtime videos of the sun, one from each sun satelite, placed next to eachother on a webpage so you can cross your eyes and see the sun in 3D.

Yah mean like these? http://photojournal...ov/feature/anaglyph
But these need red/blue glasses. [Galbinus_Caeli, Apr 23 2007]

Like this http://www.nasa.gov...main_FullDisk3D.jpg
except video sterograms instead of stillframe anaglyphs [lurch, Apr 23 2007]

Here. Go crosseyed. http://stereo-ssc.n...beacon_secchi.shtml
It ain't video, but it should stay reasonably up-to-date [lurch, Apr 25 2007]

So now you can go blind in stereo?
-- DrCurry, Apr 23 2007

[DrC] - Mr. [Christ] is referring to the new STEREO (Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory) spacecraft pair which have just begun 3D imaging of the sun. I don't know if there is anyone who has gone blind from looking at *photographs* of the sun, but it seems farfetched.

There are several current space missions that dump raw data to the public on a very short time frame (SOHO & Mars missions for example) so that shouldn't be a problem. If someone can get the data feed, it shouldn't be too difficult to patch together an applet for this. Maybe even some controls for which wavelengths in are mapped to what screen colors output - customize your view of that CME!

(I've just been viewing some stereograms - the cross-your-eyes images - and I think headaches are more probable than blindness)

So NASA already has two sun-observer satellites up, called STEREO, is distributing stereo imagery of the sun as fast as can be, and this idea here is to post real-time video as a stereo pair.

Um, there's a good chance they've already thought of that.

Um, this just goes to show how stuff that you've read can be retained in you subconscious and then you could spit it out later as your own original idea. Like inadvertantly stealing a Ziggy comic! See the link to yesterday's news article!

Well, maybe they've thought of it, but they sure haven't done it. All the images so far are those silly red/blue things that require the sissy glasses. I want stereo pairs, dammit! [+]

[JC] always takes all of the credit for what his followers are doing!
-- quantum_flux, Apr 25 2007

Presumably some fairly simple software should be able to separate a red-blue superposition into a stereo pair?

In fact, you could do it in Photoshop at a pinch.
