No-Puppy Chow   (0)  [vote for, against]
No litters, no litters! Good dog!

(Although 'dog' is used in this example, you can insert cat, ferret, skunk, fox chow, etc., as needed.)

Corn has been bred with contraceptives in it.

Corn is the #2 ingredient in dog chow.

So, make genetically modified corn with doggie contraceptives in it, and include it in commonly available dog foods (especially the el cheapo brands). Advertise it as 'no-puppy chow'. (Of course, normal dog food would still be available, for breeders or people who object to genetically modified foods.)

Bingo. Because it is a minor change for the owners, there are fewer unwanted puppies. Dog owners are happy; they don't have to deal with puppies until they want to. Humane societies are happy; they have less to pay, and can afford better care for those animals in need.

Contraceptive corn: copy of article in The Observer http://www.indymedi...63727&group=webcast
Unfortunately, I can't link directly without paying archive fees for all of you, so here's a version with minimal political commentary. [Almafeta, Oct 17 2004]

"Corn has been bred with contraceptives in it."

Didn't know that... Man.. I better lay off the stuff for a while!

over the life of a dog, would the extra cost of this food end up being more or less than the cost of getting the dog fixed?

I assume that this works hormonally, right? (I couldn't get your link to work.) I'm not sure that the convenience of providing contraception in this manner balances out the possible increase in health problems from the side effects of hormonal therapy. I'd rather get the surgery, if it means my dog will live an extra two years.

Corn Nuts next to the condoms ... I wondered why, but thats been cleared-up for me now!

Luecke: There are people who don't neuter their pets because they are uncomfortable with the idea, or they can't spend that kind of money, or they can't find the time.

Also, genetically modified grains are already used in animal feed. It doesn't seem to be raising the prices any.

I believe the contraceptive is a sort of oral spermicide, not a hormonal change, but I could be wrong.

"Don't worry baby, I don't need protection. I ate some corn an hour ago, it'll be fine."
