Orrery Helicopter

A giant orrery sits atop this marvellous vehicle, with the planets' support arms acting as aerofoils.

Some modification to the swashplate may be required to compensate for most of the lift coming from the Jovian moons.

inspired by spirocopter

Would the tail rotor be an orrery too?
-- hippo, Jun 05 2015

Actually, in a conventional helicopter, the tail rotor is only there to stop the helicopter body rotating, Newton's laws requiring the rotor and helicopter body to have the same rotational momentum. So, if the rotational momentum of the rotor/orrery is made to be zero then no tail rotor is needed. This can be done by having the main rotor rotate clockwise, but the planets and the orbits of their moons rotating anticlockwise.

This is a really orrible idea.

You couldn't have planet any worse.

Would the pilot sit inside the glazed Earth?
-- pocmloc, Jun 05 2015

Can't imagine the bearings this would require. Or the drag force from Jupiter alone...
-- RayfordSteele, Jun 05 2015

The pilot would be sat inside the sun, at least in the heliocentric orricopter.

In Italy, the police force has all of its helicopters blessed.
