Placebo With Placebo Side Effects   (+8)  [vote for, against]
Doctorremulac3s miracle hopeopathic fat burner may cause the following side effects...

Headache, nausea, sleeplessness, throttlelobotomiosis, anus awareness and meat shower syndrome in rare cases. Some death may occur but is usually temporary. Ask your registered homeopathic practitioner if Doctorremulac3's miracle fat burner is right for you. Then order it anyway.

The idea being that listing a bunch of non-existent side effects would make the non-existent benefits more believable. A variation of another idea that was kind of clever.

//hopeopathic// This explains everything homeopathy related. In fact, I'm certain that neuroscience will shortly be able to explain the exact mechanism of hope-e-opathy. Bun for wordsmith skills, [Doc].

The creepy thing about this incredibly evil idea is, it would probably be the biggest advancement in snake oil salesmanship since the "invention" of homeopathy itself.

If I heard a litany of side effects in an ad for something, I'd probably assume it really worked for whatever it said it did. Why would they list all those side effects if it didn't? Everybody knows only real medicines list their side effects right?

If I see somebody actually doing this I'm gonna feel really bad. What a horrible thing to have on your resume. "I was responsible for something incredibly evil but I was just kidding."
-- doctorremulac3, Nov 18 2015

Yes, evil. But it's better to shine light on this possibility of evil now.
-- ixnaum, Nov 23 2015

I've gotta wonder though why nobody's done this before. There's no shortage of evil people out there. Guess nobody's thought of it before.

The good news is the old "Fool some people some of the time" adage will always apply. People catch on eventually.

Except with homeopathic medicine for some reason. Hmm. Not sure why. I guess people who should protect the public assume there's some merit to the placebo effect of these nostrums and elixirs? Don't know.

Could resolve some of the issues for masochists.

Clever idea - emphasizing those fake side-effects that can be made into real symptoms through auto-suggestion is the way to go.

Warning placebo side effects include no effects what so ever. Any effects beneficial or otherwise are strictly dependent on the individual and and how much darkmatter they may have influencing the amount of evil in their bodies. Warning Placebos do not work as well around particle accelerators unless bombarded by high energy protons from the accelerator itself. Warning placebo side effects may manifest negatively if taken on haunted properties. If the placebo has been hexed demonic possession may be a side effect.

Anyway since a placebo does really nothing you can put all kinds of crazy warnings on it your want.
