visualizing art’s backside

Skin markers are often applied to key points on an athlete’s body and then scanned and digitalized to analyze economy of movement. Similar markers could be applied to the back end of an artist’s brush, pen or pencil to create an alter image of the artwork as it is being made.

Each time contact is made with the canvas, the progress of the other end of the brush is registered to produce an abstract mirror likeness of the original painting. With the assistance of my son, I manually tested the method with a well-known icon. Can you guess which one is the original?

Like a malfunctioning pantograph, then?

That would be another way, hooking a pantograph up to the other end of a pencil, as it wiggles and over exaggerates the movements of the lead.

HAHAHA!

According to the Mickey Mouse copy I'd say this should be called The Deflator.

"Deflator Mouse" by FarmerJohn. (Or was that FarmerJohann?)

I thought this was going to be about painting on butts.

The one on the right looks the artist expelled some sort of gas...or something.

How did you set up the test, [John]?
-- Worldgineer, Mar 04 2005

Big farmer drew Mickey Mouse. Little farmer held a felt pen upside down to trace Mickey’s outline. Big farmer held a piece of paper over and touching the pen. Little farmer said, “Up” and “Down” for each pen transfer to a new line.

Little Farmer is a cool dude.

[Darboy115] was disapointed.

Very good.
On a side note, have you ever tried drawing a picture by looking only at the object while not lifting your pencil from the paper? The end result looks a lot like Mirky Mouse there.

Now I want to see some Mirky Mouse cartoons. Maybe when little farmer is older he could do a short animation.
-- wagster, Mar 06 2005

A new disney character, Mirky Mouse.

I can imagine him in movies, sorta like Mickey's messed up twin.
