Printed/patterned seatbelts   (+6)  [vote for, against]
(not 100.0% my idea, maybe 99.5%)

Last night I saw a photoshopped picture of a rainbow seatbelt: [link]. A couple of the commenters said they'd like to have rainbow seatbelts: [link].

So I did Google searches for 'patterned seatbelt' and 'printed seatbelt' and was astonished to find literally zero results about seatbelts with patterns or designs printed on them. (The closest things I found were patterned seatbelt pads: [link]. I also found a 3D-printed seatbelt silencer: [link] and a printed coat with a seatbelt buckle-style closure: [link].)

So I propose that automakers produce seatbelts with various printed patterns, as another way for customers to customize their cars. Custom designs could be offered for a higher price.

Of course, these would have to go through safety testing to ensure the dye doesn't weaken the material. But that's just an implementation step.

Update: Two days later, this idea is the top Google search result for both 'printed seatbelt' and 'patterned seatbelt'. (And yes, I did check the non-personalized results.)

If the seat-belts were embossed, a post-accident victim could have something bruise-tattooed onto their torso during the collision.

// the dye doesn't weaken the material. //

The yarn used to produce the fibre is pigmented at the melt stage, so the colouring is intrinsic.

Isn't it always ?

Seatbelts that look bloodstained with yellow tags reading "EXHIBIT #L53F" would be good ...

Not really an answer, but in my yoof fake seat belts tshirts were in vogue, so you could kind of do it that way.

So then you could even weave patterns into the seatbelts!

//If the seat-belts were embossed, a post-accident victim could have something bruise-tattooed onto their torso during the collision// - with different levels of embossing on the seatbelt you could have different patterns or text 'bruised' onto your flesh depending on the acceleration experienced in the accident. Emergency medical teams would look at the distinctive chequerboard pattern on your abdomen and say to themselves "Ah yes, a 5G impact...".

I'd like the pattern to exactly match my shirt, so that it blends and disappears.

[+] I want a chain link pattern. Or maybe solid bright yellow; good for fishing the middle belt out from between the cushions. Ammunition belt would work, some places.

"Can you even dye my eyes to match my gown ?" said Judy Garland.

"We can even dye your seat belt to match both." Replied the beauticians of OZ.

Brightly colored or day glow / reflective seatbelts might make law enforcement verification that the passengers are wearing them easier.
