RFID USB Key   (+3, -1)  [vote for, against]
Making my office day easier

First off, I'm assuming that my office is fairly typical. Almost everyone in my office has a USB memory key. Everyone is required to carry an RFID access card to get into the building.

A couple of nights ago we were dissecting one of the access cards and noticed that the actual RFID tag is fairly small, relative to the size of the access card.

By embedding an RFID tag into a USB key, it would be possible to reduce the amount of equipment that individuals need to bring to work (or to leave at home by accident). An added benefit would be the look on other worker's faces when you swipe your usb key to get into the building.

Just implant the tag subcutaneously. No need to swipe anything - just reach for the door handle.

I dunno [texticle]. I'd much rather have my security card stolen from my wallet than my hand chopped off.

ok - security implication time You lose the key - lost data and no access to building The key is stolen - No access to building and they have your work. Someone codes a virus that stops the "swiper" working...No one has access to the building

So, if you lose your trousers (pants?) and their contents, you're stuffed.

Take it from me: under certain conditions, yes.

Just cut the RFID chip out of the card and epoxy it to the thumb drive.
