Rain-powered Music Box

Utilizing the gravitational power of rain, there is a small "rainmill" hooked up to a waterproof musicbox, slowly turning.

As the raindrops catch in the buckets on the mill, it turns, also turning the little cylinder in the musicbox.

A melody comes forth from the small box.

Of course, it is playing "Singing in the Rain".

The beauty of this one is that it isn't used to generate power in any way, just tinkle a little.

What, it can't play "My Girl?"

Bread anyway.

How's about a honky-tonk pianola? It could play cockney knees-up tunes as the rain falls.

What a horrible thought. "It's raining Chas and Daves."

+ for you though, DF.

The Cascades' "Rhythm of the Rain" for me...

You could put these in modified drainpipes and have yourself some kind of pipe organ.
-- RayfordSteele, Nov 09 2004

Excellent. I like the fact that the lighter the rain, the slower the tune would be played.

I'm racking my brain to think of other ways of making music from the weather in your garden. Wind chimes have been done......lightening theremin anyone...?

If you could direct the raindrops somehow, time them using some sort of valve or mechanical means out of a spout, you could place timpani heads underneath them and have some great music. As a matter of fact...
