Halfbakery: Remembrance: Halfbaker
Run, Forrest, Run.   (+38)  [vote for, against]
Run with the wind.

The terrible shock of losing a close friend or partner can leave a person unable to face messages of condolence and sympathy from friends and loved ones. Friends and loved ones are thus left in a bewildering dilemma, as being unable to offer the merest crumb of comfort further compounds the feeling of helplessness in the teeth of fate.

I propose use of the open source format where messages of tribute, sympathy and support can be left for viewing when the requisite strength can be mustered.

Susen, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I don't seem to be able to find words of my own, right now, so I hope Susen won't mind if I borrow hers:

"From chainsaw and axe, forrest ran,
Pursued by a silver woodsman tin can,
a strawman and lion that wailed,
and the young Dorothy Gale,
He grabbed Toto and headed back to Kan"

Run, Forrest, run.

If I may:

He stayd not for more bidding, but away
Was suddein vanished out of his sight:
The Northerne wind his wings did broad display
At his commaund, and reared him vp light
From off the earth to take his aerie flight.
They lookt about, but no where could espie
Tract of his foot: then dead through great affright
They both nigh were, and each bad other flie:
Both fled attonce, ne euer backe returned eie.

Till that they come vnto a forrest greene,
In which they shrowd th'selues from causelesse feare;
Yet feare them followes still, where so they beene,
Each trembling leafe, and whistling wind they heare,
As ghastly bug their haire on end does reare:
Yet both doe striue their fearfulnesse to faine.
At last they heard a horne, that shrilled cleare
Throughout the wood, that ecchoed againe,
And made the forrest ring, as it would riue in twaine.

-- sambwiches, Feb 14 2003

I was going to request that no votes be cast until I remembered that, on the shuttle idea, someone annotated that voting on a posting of this nature is the internet equivalent of lighting a candle.

Sambwiches, I appreciate where you are coming from. I believe Forrest's contribution to the halfbakery and the respects posted here stand as their own tribute.

rfr's annotation to "Jurassic Book Club":

A Dream Lies Dead

A dream lies dead here.
May you softly go
Before this place, and turn away your eyes,
Nor seek to know the look of that which dies
Importuning Life for life. Walk not in woe,
But, for a little, let your step be slow.
And, of your mercy, be not sweetly wise
With words of hope and Spring and tenderer skies.
A dream lies dead; and this all mourners know:

Whenever one drifted petal leaves the tree-
Though white of bloom as it had been before
And proudly waitful of fecundity-
One little loveliness can be no more;
And so must Beauty bow her imperfect head
Because a dream has joined the wistful dead!

(Dorothy is almost my favorite poet)

When the race gets hard to run It means you just can't take the pace When it's time to have your fun You find the tears run on down through Your face, then you stop and think a little Are you the victim of the system Anyday now they gonna let you down Remember Natty will be there To see you through

And ain't it good to know now JAH will be waiting there Ain't it doggone good to know you all JAH will be waiting there Wait in Summer, wait in Spring Wait in Autumn, Winter thing Tribes goes up, all the tribe goes down Bring my children from the end of the earth

Many a time I sit and wonder why This race so, so very hard to run Then I say to my soul take courage Battle to be won Like a ship that's tossed and driven Battered by the angry sea yeah! Say the tide of time was raging Don't let the fury fall on me, no, no, no

Cause I know JAH will be waiting there Ain't it good to know now JAH will be waiting there Lost and found, who speak I give Speak I give, lost and found

When in disgrace with fortune in men's eyes
I alone beweep my outcast state
and trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries
and look upon myself and curse my fate
wishing me like one more rich in hope
featured like him, like him with friends possessed
desiring this man's art and that man's scope
with what I most enjoy contented least.

Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising
happily I think on thee
and then my state like to the lark
at break of day arising from sullen earth
sings hymns at Heaven's gate
for thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
that then I scorn to change my state with kings.

Suddenly, you were gone
From all the lives you left your mark upon

I remember
How we talked and drank into the misty dawn
I hear the voices

We ran by the water on the wet summer lawn
I see the footprints
I remember

I feel the way you would
I feel the way you would

Tried to believe but you know it's no good
This is something that just can't be understood

I remember
The shouts of joy skiing fast through the woods
I hear the echoes

I learned your love for life,
I feel the way that you would
I feel your presence
I remember

I feel the way you would
This just can't be understood...

-- Zimmy, Apr 14 2006

This thread always brings me sadness, and joy.

But then when I think that FarmerJohn might as well be dead, it makes me cry also.

He wrote me not long ago, and had an idea, just bursting from his head. He gave it to me.

Two days later so did waugs.

waugs left the bakery because of the ill treatment he felt John recieved.

I will never post a brilliant idea by someone else, and sense I have none...

We are all shorting ourselves of some funny, sarcastic, caustic, controversial bakers. This world we call the bakery becomes smaller; Not always because of human loss, but because of human loss.
-- blissmiss, Apr 17 2006

The HB seems a bit empty nowadays; us (relatively) old-timers will just have to stick it out till the next generation comes.
-- DesertFox, Apr 17 2006

Is there any chance they might come back soon? I've never 'met' them but I've heard a lot and read many ideas and I miss them. I fell into this catagory shortly after finding the HB and I cried more in that one night than I had in a really long time.
-- NotTheSharpestSpoon, Apr 17 2006

Certain things make it difficult to be here. The same things make it difficult to be away. I expect that difficult-to-be-here will be the driver sometime soon.
-- half, Apr 17 2006

Yes half, I agree.

Neither one has any desisre to come back. Both felt the bakery had played itself out. I was kind of a neutral player, and so I was asked in private, (by them), to post their ideas. (God what a gift and what a curse).

I declined. Alas, they are of the brilliant sort, and me, well the crying kind. No "poor" idea that wrestled it's way out of my mind maze, could ever have seen the light of day, without their ability to prick it out of me. But they did, they spoke in ideas.

I'll sum them up, with out giving too much detail. Oddly they both had to do with snow, children, and that kind of kid happiness that can only happen on US snow when schools have let out early, or in Northern Europe, on *just* that day, when your parents steal you for a few, to ensure you get a well rounded education, including fucking fun.

Both of the ideas had the same back drop. One was informational, one mythical, and nonsensical. Unlike a Door Pathbeater, the second swirled my margaritta with his Rat-like-Tail.

Point being, none. Carry on, And every now and then, I hope when I pop in I'll see a memory. Not for just those who have died, but for those who we have let go, here.
-- blissmiss, Apr 17 2006

I agree [bliss], but I can't say that this is the place for such a discussion. [FarmerJohn] has left, but [FarmerJohn] is just a user ID on a webpage. This page is dedicated to the memory of [runforrestrun], the person behind the user name, that was so sadly lost.

If I may borrow a few words from another posting by [DesertFox], they are more eloquent and poignant than I would have come up with - I never knew him. I am sad that I didn't.
-- hidden truths, Apr 17 2006

Bliss, thanks for sharing that with us. As long as they're both well and happy, that's what counts. Anything else is selfishness on our parts.

I hope these comments serve as a reminder, here of all places, that the people we love are with us for a short time only, and we should treat each other with love and respect while we have the chance.

-- blissmiss, Apr 17 2006

Alas, the human soul was not meant to say goodbye. It is the only word never used in heaven. Too many goodbyes have been said here: I hope for a day where goodbye is nothing more than a heavily-boned idea here.
