A pocket of explosive gas, such as methane, is entombed in the wax along the wick. When the pocket is breached, the flame ignites the gas, which promptly consumes all surrounding oxygen to snuff the flame. A series of such pockets along the length of the candle allow for reuse.

Are you sure you want a gas? It seems that could diffuse out over time, disabling this important safety feature. But I'm sure someone here could recommend a suitable solid alternative. [+]
